    Grow your own

I grew sunflowers for them. It didn't come close to filling them up, but they ate over well 100 flower heads this summer, and we had pretty flowers too. They also get almost all the kale that comes out of the garden. I have 12 big kale plants and I bring them a big handful of leaves every day...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

I agree! Especially when you live next to a state park and have to deal with foxes, hawks, weasels, raccoons, coyotes, and we've even seen mountain lions! Not to mention the neighbor's dog :/

post your chicken coop pictures here!

My Coop We had the advantage of an existing structure in the form of an old goat pen. The first thing we did was line the floor with 1" hardware cloth and tack it to the sides. This may sound excessive, but it seemed more logical than digging a 12" trench around the whole pen to bury the...

    Delaware not laying...common with breed?

My Delawares did the opposite- they started laying a full month before my Wyandottes that were the same age. It must not be a breed thing.

Ooh, I almost got some polish chicks this summer but the timing didn't work out. I think I would deal with the poor laying just to laugh at their ridiculous afros!

roostingand introducing the babies to an old hen

Many people recommend introducing new birds by keeping them in a separate area in view of the others. Another way that is highly recommended is to introduce them at night. When the hen is sleeping you can put the youngsters in the coop with her and when they wake up altogether they are family...

    Gender Help Please

The only real sign this early is the comb being bigger, but that isn't a very reliable sign. I thought for sure I had a roo in this picture until she started laying.

It's funny how we end up with more and more chickens! I wanted to start with 8 but we came home from the feed store with 13, now we have 28!

    What are you canning now?

This time of year I find myself canning a lot of chicken stock. At least once a month I roast 2 birds (not my own- usually), and use the bones for a big batch of stock the next day. I absolutely love having home-canned stock on hand. The way it stays gelled when the jars are cool is nothing...

    cleaning

It really depends on how many chickens you have, how big your coop is, and how much time they spend in it. I have a thick layer of dirt and straw on the bottom of my coop to absorb the droppings and I don't have to clean it very often. My girls also have a big yard that they spend most of the...

    Hi

Welcome! I just joined BYC yesterday but I've been lurking for a long time too. It really is a great community. 18 weeks is an exciting age for chickens because you never know when you'll find that first egg!

Welcome! How old are your hens? Are they laying yet? What do you do with all those eggs?
