I grew sunflowers for them. It didn't come close to filling them up, but they ate over well 100 flower heads this summer, and we had pretty flowers too.
They also get almost all the kale that comes out of the garden. I have 12 big kale plants and I bring them a big handful of leaves every day...
I am a watercolor artist specializing in chickens. Send me pictures of your chicken or pet and I will turn them into a beautiful 12 x 9 painting. You don't pay until your painting is finished and approved! Painting will be safely shipped within 24 hours of payment. For an additional $10 I...
I agree! Especially when you live next to a state park and have to deal with foxes, hawks, weasels, raccoons, coyotes, and we've even seen mountain lions! Not to mention the neighbor's dog :/
My Coop

Ooh, I almost got some polish chicks this summer but the timing didn't work out. I think I would deal with the poor laying just to laugh at their ridiculous afros!
Many people recommend introducing new birds by keeping them in a separate area in view of the others. Another way that is highly recommended is to introduce them at night. When the hen is sleeping you can put the youngsters in the coop with her and when they wake up altogether they are family...
The only real sign this early is the comb being bigger, but that isn't a very reliable sign. I thought for sure I had a roo in this picture until she started laying.
This time of year I find myself canning a lot of chicken stock. At least once a month I roast 2 birds (not my own- usually), and use the bones for a big batch of stock the next day. I absolutely love having home-canned stock on hand. The way it stays gelled when the jars are cool is nothing...
It really depends on how many chickens you have, how big your coop is, and how much time they spend in it. I have a thick layer of dirt and straw on the bottom of my coop to absorb the droppings and I don't have to clean it very often. My girls also have a big yard that they spend most of the...
Welcome! I just joined BYC yesterday but I've been lurking for a long time too. It really is a great community. 18 weeks is an exciting age for chickens because you never know when you'll find that first egg!
