    Rasing Shirimp For Meat? (QUESTIONS)

Because shrimp molt to grow, they are fairly sensitive to water quality and are much harder to grow than fish. I would contact your county extensions service and ask who is the nearest aquaculture extension agent that can help you. They will mostly likely give you advice for free and connect you...

New decree from NC Agriculture Head requires registration of even one chicken with the State!

We already have this in MD, has not been a big deal but it did drag my timeline out until the last second for chicks (I had already ordered). Took me a few months to get all my licenses. I had to get the state license before our county one and our new dog had to be licensed in order to get the...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Ours were noisy, but no squatting. I was surprised to find that first egg yesterday (19 weeks 4 days), I thought one of the other hens (golden cuckoo) was a little more developed, but the comb on the blue splash hen in question developed very quickly over the last two weeks. Two others (black...

Wooo Hooooo. We got our first egg today!!! We think it was Coco CHanel (upper right). Clara Barton upper left is the survivor from our home crop surgery and is doing very well!

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

We started a lottery at home for the first egg. Our Marans are 18 weeks now (we have 2 Blue Splash, 2 Black Copper, 1 Golden Cuckoo, & 1 Silver Cuckoo). So far the money seems to be on the golden...but no one chose anything closer than several weeks out.

all chickens killed by unknown predator.

Sounds like it could be a raccoon. They can pull wire and avoid traps pretty handily. I've only dealt with them and dogs, so not too familiar with other predators.

    Meyers Chick Problems?

We too had an order from Meyer, from what I could gather there are some significant issues with the Cleveland PO distribution center. I tracked a few orders that appeared to be stuck there for quite a long time. It's too bad, does not appear to be Meyer. I also disagree that all stress is...

all chickens killed by unknown predator.

ime, most times it is a neighbor's dog, raccoons have been number two on the list, but multiple kills usually have involved dogs (usually labs).

Crop Surgery Performed - More pics & How To Steps posted - Pg 10

We did the crop surgery recently as well and had absolutely no bleeding. I tried to cut where there were no veins in the skin, but we were shocked that there was not some minimal bleeding. Don't be discouraged you tried to save him versus putting him down. We did suture both layers, but in your...

    crop problems. chicken near death

The outcome of doing nothing is obvious. I don't think the pain is anymore than being put down. It is not a long drawn out procedure.

    crop problems. chicken near death

How many poops are you getting from her and has it gone down at all? You likely need to be prepared to do home surgery on the impaction. It really is not that complicated nor difficult. We had no pain response, struggle, bleeding, etc. Ours recovered quickly thereafter. Look at youtube for a...

Crop Impaction/ Sour Crop Concern in 10 week old pullet?! PLEASE HELP!!!

you need to separate her and watch to see if the crop goes down any and she has normal poops while you are withholding food. We had to do home surgery on ours. Might want to look for dissolvable sutures and a sharp exacto knife to be prepared if you end up there.

    Help! Pendulous/blocked crop.

The surgery is no worse than putting one down (I have now done both). Clara Barton, lol, did not squirm or make any noises. The worse part was my nerves and the intitial cut. The skin is hard to cut without stretching it really tight first. There was no bleeding either when I cut the skin layer...

    Help! Pendulous/blocked crop.

Did she have access to anything to block it 9grass,etc.)? We had a Black Copper Marans get an impacted crop at ~5 weeks after being outside a short while (it appeared pendulous as well). We had to do home surgery. Clara Barton, has recovered and doing well with others in the coop. If it is...

Meyer Hatchery Black Copper Marans, how light or dark did your hens eggs end up being?

Wow, those are nice. Thanks for taking the time to post. I wanted the black copper and our kids wanted different color chickens, so we went with a mix of Marans. Hoping we get a mix of nice brown eggs this fall; regular brown works, but hope we get a couple darker ones like you posted.

    Meyer hatchery reviews???

I ordered ~15 mixed Marans pullets. Got 15 pullets (2 DOA) of exactly the color variety and sex ordered. No roos made the trip.

Meyer Hatchery Black Copper Marans, how light or dark did your hens eggs end up being?

I searched all over the web for that info and did not find any recent posts about Meyer's stock (most were 2010-2011). I am in the same boat and waiting on our bunch (Black Copper, Blue Splash, Golden Cuckoo, Silver Cuckoo). I guess we wont know until the fall :)
