  1. snoozing chick

1 week old chick with single swollen/closed eye.

Thank you! She seemed a little dehydrated - dry poop when we were tending the eye, so she got some fresh gro-gel and nutridrench and is back sleeping under the brooder plate with her buddies. Hopefully she keeps improving tomorrow. Will use saline to flush in the morning!
  2. snoozing chick

1 week old chick with single swollen/closed eye.

Do you recommend separating her from the others? I worry about making chick pecking order dynamics worse by isolating her and then needing to re-interstate, but if it is bacterial/viral and contagious I don’t want it to spread.
  3. snoozing chick

1 week old chick with single swollen/closed eye.

Thank you for the quick reply. Sure - natural works for me! I have regular colloidal silver from CVS for us humans, are you referring to the same stuff? It’s ok to go straight on her eyeball?

1 week old chick with single swollen/closed eye.

We have a new batch of 8 chicks, one week old yesterday. Various breeds, all have been perfectly healthy up to today when we noticed that the Salmon Faverolle chick cannot open one of her eyes, I reviewed photos and she could definitely open her eye and no sign of problems last week. Details and...

What color eggs does your chicken lay?

The white long one in the middle is from our Polish, the creamy tan long skinny ones are from our Sicilian Buttercups. The small oval cream ones at 12:00, 4:00 and 7:00 are from our D’Uccles. The light brownish pink one on the far left at 8:00 is from our bantam Brahma. And then the Easter...

Extended laying in winter and how to stop eggs from freezing

I’m in CT and we get freezing temps regularly, but a couple of my 12 chickens are still laying even without light. I just check the nest boxes regularly - usually early afternoon and then again late afternoon when I close them back up in their coop. The eggs come out so warm, it would take being...

    Beautiful bantams: D’Uccle discussion

Thank you for the input that Portia is a hen - I got confirmation yesterday when i caught her in the nesting box laying!! Her large comb threw me off. But she’s definitely a hen! :)

    Beautiful bantams: D’Uccle discussion

Love my d’uccles! I have three: two porcelain and one Mille Fleur. One of my porcelain’s has a much larger comb, and I’m wondering if she is a he - but they are 7 months old and she hasn’t crowed yet. So, we’ll see. Here’s a pic of Portia, whom I’m not sure is a pullet or a cockerel... what do...

Does anyone have an EE that looks like this?

I have a bantam EE who looks like your Cleopatra! This is Lucky, so named because she survived a raccoon attack when she was just 5weeks old. She lost a wing in the battle, but she’s spunky and so so sweet - really bonded to us during her recovery in the house. This picture is when she was about...

    My daughter and her chickens

She’s the reason we got chickens this year - she had been asking for 3 years (since she was 3yo!) and we finally took the plunge. She’s a great chicken farmer!

Merging two young flocks into one

Right now Flock B is a mixed flock of Bantams and Standards, and they are fine. We purposefully chose large fowl that are not that large when mature so as to avoid issues. Hopefully since the mixed flock is used to being mixed, a few more bantams will just be more of the norm. :)

    Advice on Flock size please.

This is all valuable advice, I appreciate you sharing it.

Merging two young flocks into one

Nearly all: 9 are bantams, 2 are Sicialiam Buttercups (a small sized standard breed, just a touch larger than my bantam Brahma), and 1 is a polish, also not large in breed size. Yes, the wingless EE gets along great with her current flock. Here are the two flocks in their entirely: Flock A...

Merging two young flocks into one

This is all SUPER helpful. I don’t have pictures yet, because our new coop and run get delivered next week. But I will absolutely post pics as soon as we have it ready, before I add the birds so you all can chime in with suggestions. Already, the suggestions for exit-able hiding spots in the run...

Merging two young flocks into one

Thank you so much, I really hope we can do this successfully, I integrated a single pullet into the smaller flock when they were younger, and fingers crossed we can do this larger merge as well. I appreciate your encouragement that it can be done.

Merging two young flocks into one

I have two small young flocks of bantams and would like to merge them into a single flock. Next week our large new coop and covered run arrives with the plan to house them together. Right now Flock A has 5 pullets aged eight months, with 3 EE, a buff Brahma, and a d’Uccle. (All bantams). The...
