This is my first time having more than one rooster so I don't know what's "normal" or what's concerning behavior. We have 24 hens and 2 roosters; one is about 2 years old (speckled sussex) and the other is a little over a year (black australorp). They free range all day and have a pretty big run...
Thanks for the insight! I will update when they start laying. I already have 4 olive egger chicks in this batch so if these 3 end up being olive eggers too I'll have quite a lot of green eggs to look forward to 🤣
All chicks are about 2 months old. I got two cream legbars, one has a crest and one doesn't. They look pretty similar otherwise, the one without a crest is a bit darker in color. Is this normal for cream legbars? Is she potentially not pure cream legbar? They came from the same place (feed...
This evening I found my favorite chicken, my olive egger dead in the coop. Not in a nest box but in a corner of the coop where they lay eggs sometimes (not usually her though, she always laid in the nest boxes). My partner said he noticed her sitting there earlier and he thought she was just...
One pullet from my latest batch has always been a bit...off. She's the smallest of the bunch by far, and there was a brief period after we brought them home that she seemed like she wasn't going to make it (lethargy, no interest in food/water) but she pulled out of it after a day and was fine...
I just wanted to say I've run into the same thing! 🤣 The one I found required you to give them all your hens as well (because they "don't support breaking up families" 🙄), sign an agreement to never buy or breed birds (not just chickens! any birds!) and to "adopt" them instead, pay a $20...
Now everyone is 6 or 7 weeks old so I figured it's time for an update! I got some answers, but some mysteries still remain...(well, one mystery)
The "Marans Hybrids" aka Turkey and Vulture. I was kind of worried about Turkey because it was very slow to feather but I'm fairly certain it's a...
Thanks for your input everyone!! I hope Speckled Sussex #2 is the only rooster! That would be great. We're allowed to have roosters so we'll probably keep him. I'll update again when they're a bit older!
My batch of chicks are all at least 4 weeks old now! We purchased all 9 of these chicks as sexed pullets from a local breeder/hatchery but there's a few that got me like 🤔 so I thought I'd start a thread! I'll be updating every few weeks with more pics since I know they're still pretty young...
I agree it looks like a pullet. Like others have said SLW can get red pretty early. I had 2 last summer and was worried they had such red combs/wattles so young but they were both hens. This is them at 7 weeks
Wow really?! That would be great if they're both pullets! I've read that slower to feather out and leggy usually means it's a boy, so I was convinced! Is it common to have a pullet grow its feathers out slower than the others?
(Apologies, I don't know if they're sex-linked or autosexing or what the correct term would be!) I know it's a bit early to tell, but this has been bugging me! I bought these two "Marans hybrids" as sexed pullets from a local breeder/hatchery. Not sure what the mix is exactly but the description...
I always say an easy way to tell is how expensive they are, lol! Easter Eggers are usually pretty cheap (like $10 or less) and true Ameraucanas are much more expensive (like $20 or more). I love easter eggers they're really fun!
Thanks for the help! I'll try to get a picture of the navel scab, I noticed it while checking her for pasty butt. It's below her vent, looks like a hard little black scab. I read that it's normal and falls off after a while, but this one's is large and still attached.
As for the "marans...
We picked up 9 chicks on Saturday, all are breeds I've never had before except for the easter eggers. We got 2 speckled sussex, 2 easter eggers, 2 "marans hybrid", a welsummer, a salmon faverolle, and an olive egger. All sexed so should be pullets. One of the easter eggers, the smallest of the...
We currently brood in the house because we don't have any other option, haha. No garage and the big chicken coop doesn't have electricity so that wouldn't work. Used to keep them in the spare bathroom, but we got a bigger brooder this year (it's actually a "coop" we got on amazon; wouldn't use...
I always expect at least one chick to not make it, they're just very fragile creatures. However over the years I've gotten a lot better with husbandry and learned a lot about optimum chick care and setting them up for success. Last year was our return to chick raising after several years...
