Yeah! I'm going (barring a death in the family like last year)! And I'll see if I can talk my husband into taking the day off work (difficult for a chef on a Saturday).
It is 7 degrees outside and 20 degrees in my main coop. My momma still isn't bringing her 10.5 week old chicks on the roosts at night, they sleep cuddled up in one of the nest boxes. One good thing about it is if there are any eggs in the box she chooses, they aren't frozen by the time I get...
I put roofs on most of the runs last year and wind breaks up for the winter. They definitely don't like walking in the white stuff. Last year I shoveled a path for them to the woodshed where they like to dust bath, but I'm not going to do that if we keep getting 4+inches per day. We have...
Coopers hawk vs. Peregrine falcon? I can't see if it has the peregrine's mask from those pics, but I had one near me in the summer. I've more recently had a pair of red tailed hawks flying above, but not attacking my chickens. Their screech always makes me worried for the girls. I also may have...
I've been using shavings for a while, but you are right, some TSC's store their bales outside and they get wet. I get it from the local feed store and haven't had any problems. I pile it pretty deep in the coop, mainly for insulation, and keep adding to it every week or every other week. Then...
Silkie chicks are so friggin cute! This is the first time that I've had a clutch of 6 hatch (only 4 are showing themselves in this pic). I hope I have some girls this time.
Aart, are you still outside Kzoo? If so, you are in my neck of the woods (I grew up in Ann Arbor, moved to Kzoo, back to Ann Arbor, then to NY, and now back outside of Kzoo)
Yes he does. And they get along quite well, though Leapy will occasionally bump this one off a girl. They don't fight, but Leapy is in charge. Leapy is also still bigger.
Psh... I'm still getting a ton of squash, cukes, tomatoes, greens, radishes, and herbs. We do a wintry green manure mix in places, hoops in other places (I've had brassicas go through January before) and hoping to make a deconstructable greenhouse over a raised bed this year. We'll at least be...
I do like the chantecler boys we got. I also like the idea of breeding for those that are more winter hardy, with the small combs. I'm not going for pure bred birds in the end, just selecting from those I have for winter hardy, large, healthy egg layers. Well see what I get.
