    Possibly egg bound chicken?

Yesterday we noticed that our hen looked like she was egg bound. We caught her and saw the lump between her legs. It was not hard, so we feared that she might have broken it herself. We have been giving her lots of calcium and baths. Also put some lubrication on and inside her vent. But I have...

Why do I keep on failing to keep baby chicks?

We kept our chicks in a box in the garage with a heat lamp. Gave them fresh water daily and fresh chick feed. After a few days we just took them outside, they ran around freely by the house and hid in between the bushes. We put the water and feed out there too and in the evening they would come...

My roosters name is Napoleon :) His first favorite chicken was Josephine, when she died we got Marie-Louise. For some reason he liked those two the most.

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Haha that's too funny! But no, he is a Svart Hona. Thyey have both abandoned the egg, so maybe it wasn't even theirs.

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

No, he isn't. He was sitting on the egg though. Maybe they just cuddled up in the nesting box and an egg happened to be in there already. We do have other chickens. My husband will have to check when he goes out to the barn again.

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

My husband acquired a couple Svart Honas last year. Now it seems like the hen laid an egg, but it also seems like the rooster is up there with her. Do the Svart Hona roosters take turns sitting on the eggs?

    Swollen, oozing eyes in hen

I'm not sure my mother would be too happy ;) Good thing Napoleon had so many mistresses :D

    Swollen, oozing eyes in hen

Napoleon is still doing well, but I'm sure he feels lonely without her. We have other hens, he will probably pick a new favourite one soon. I thought about the mistresses, but decided against Maria, because that's my mom's name bahaha

    Swollen, oozing eyes in hen

It's very easy when they are that friendly! I named her Marie-Louise (Duchess of Parma), because she would always hang out with our rooster Napoleon. In real life Napoleons second wife was named Marie-Louise. Our rooster had a first wife, which died too and she was named Joséphine de...

    Swollen, oozing eyes in hen

About 1.5 years. She was the friendliest and biggest bird we had. She was heavier than our rooster, even when she died she was still heavier than the other ones. The swelling in her right eye just wouldn't go away, the vet didn't know anything else we could've done either.

Thank you :) Our grown turkey Abraham Lincoln doesn't get along with our rooster Napoleon :( But Abe will follow you around everywhere, he is really friendly. The other three are still a little young and always hang out together. Has anyone of you ever had mites in winter? My husband said...

How old was the oldest egg you've ever cooked?

I'm not sure if it's illegal, buuut they do sit out here in Germany and I've never seen a store refrigerate them. We do put them there after we purchase, but we never care how long they have been sitting in the fridge and none has gone bad. As my mother says: "We didn't have a "Best by" date in...
