Minneapolis suburbs and the search for a chicken friendly one

Columbia Heights - technically, no...HOWEVER...we had chickens there for several years (as did others). City council took it up several times and the general consensus was - work it out with your neighbors. Ours were all ok with it so we were good to go. Mounds View - the limit is 8...

    Please HELP - AGGRESSIVE HEN

I had the same experience with mine. I "pecked" her back a couple of times with my index and middle fingers. I tapped firmly (not too hard) on her head a couple of times when she started trying to peck me and she'd leave me alone after that. Otherwise I'd pick her up and carry her around with me...

I'll second orpington13. I absolutely love my barred rocks and they are my favorites. They are the friendliest of birds and they do tend to get more treats, but I think that's just because they come running when they see me so they always get there first. On the other hand, I have a buff...

Review by '' on item 'Barred Rock'

I have a mixed flock with 6 different breeds and these are my absolute favorite! We have two and they are the friendliest birds of all. They like to interact with us and both of them let us handle them a lot more easily than our other birds. They make tasty eggs and awesome pets, but can be a...

    Help with genders please

Thank you. I'm sad because I can't keep him :( I'm going to hold out a little longer because the comb is still yellow. I'm not sure why their combs showed up pink in the pictures, none of them are even a little bit pink.

    Help with genders please

My birds are 9 or 10 weeks old except the speckled Sussex who is 7 or 8 weeks. Can you help me with genders please? I think the 3 older ones are girls but I'm not sure about the Sussex because of the bigger comb. Help please! Thanks Speckled Sussex RIR, BR , and EE BR

We've got four, all different breeds. It turns out it was our EE. I found a brown one yesterday, so now we've got 2 layers at 5 months! We must be doing something right!

An egg! An egg! They laid an egg!!!

I'm so excited! It's tiny but awesome! I was surprised because they're only 4.5 months old, but there it was when I went in to change their water! I think it was Stampy, our buff orp. Her comb got really red recently. Bask in its eggy glory!

    Finches taking chicken feathers

Has anyone else seen this? Finches are taking my chickens feathers off the ground. It's kind of funny because the girls get all riled up and defensive, but I can't figure out why the finches are taking them or what they're using them for. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

Updates: Almost 8 weeks Barred Rock has pretty round tail feathers. EE pullet and SL Wyandotte. Buff Orp SL Wyandotte (facing the camera) doesn't have any comb to speak of. The area is red, but it's pretty flat. She's just got a little "pimple" thing. None of their wattles...

    Bump on nostril

My 6 week old barred rock developed a bump on her right nostril today. It doesn't seem to bother her and there isn't any mucous or drainage. She's acting normally otherwise and she seems happy. Any ideas what it is? What should I do?

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

OK.. I'm a little embarrassed, but I got my dates mixed up. They're actually 5.5 weeks in these pictures. They'll be 6 weeks tomorrow. Does that change your opinions?
