We have never had a sick chicken and I am so worried about our rhode island red. She was acting strange- letting the kids pick her up and walking very slowly. We looked at her closely and noticed swelling below her vent but the vent looks normal. There are no feather on the swollen area...
Our 13 chickens are 5 months old and free ranging during the day. We found our first egg in my son's toy truck today. I have no doubt they are laying in other areas of the property. I was thinking of confining them to the coop and run for a few days to teach them to use the nesting boxes. Will...
They move around so fast it is hard to get a good picture. I have 2 australorps, 2 barred rocks, 2 new hamp reds, 2 leghorns, 1easter egger, 1 buff orpington, and 3 silkies. The silkies like to pose for pictures.
Thank you so much for your help! I did use the nutradrench when I got the chicks this morning. They had that at my feed store. They are all alive! I have 13 seeemingly heathly happy chicks. Thank you again!
My first ever chicks shipped on Monday (1 day priority express ) they are still not here. I am hoping to get them tomorrow (Thursday). I am expecting them to be DOA or very close. My question is... what would you rec feeding them to give them the best chance. I have been looking on...
I have a dozen one week old baby chicks. An eldery relative passed away today and we need to pack up the kids and drive an hour away. I will be there for 24 hours. Can I bring the chicks and their supplies in the car?
They would not have heat in the car although it is in the 90s here in south...
Thank you! In your opinion is there a better bedding for a wet area or is coarse sand the best we can do? Our chickens will not be in standing water but the ground will stay wet for long periods of time.
Yes, i have done many searches of the forums. Some people love sand. Of course, for every one person praising sand there is someone else cursing it. I guess I will just try it out and see how it works.
We live in warm, humid and very rainy (at least all summer) South Florida. We are building an open air coop because I don't want to coop up the chickens in the hot damp air. BUT I am not sure what to do about bedding in the coop and run. The coop will have a roof but one wall will be open...
I do think I have to find a way to make some shade in the runs. I can't change the direction but the open side faces West. That means a ton of afternoon sun. i was thinking of using sand in the runs. We are in the subtropics and it rains alot in the summer. I think sand will dry fast as it...
Ok, I hadn't thought of that. Thank you.
I was thinking we would just use the run when we were gone for the day or there are preditors around. Hmmm, so much to consider
Hi, i am new here and had a few questions about designing my coop. You guys seem to have a ton of knowledge about coops. :)
We are in South Florida and it is hot so I would like to have an open air coop. Is there any advantage in having the run all on one side of the coop or split On each side...
