Dad picked up some bird's at an auction today. He was told they're not laying yet, but that's about all. Looks like 4 pullets and a roo to me. Maybe y'all can help me decide what breeds they are.[/IMG]
One of our Barton County 4Hers made the news with poultry showmanship:

@chicken danz We have the same worm problem with my DH's bulldog. Poor guy has lost 10 pounds and has pretty serious anemia. He's a rescue so we don't know his true age, but he's more than 8 which is getting up there for an English. Hopefully the Panacur won't be too rough on him.
The chicks...
@Grain Gypsy I have some disappointed 4Hers myself. We picked up some Barnevelders and two Lavender Orpingtons from @rvroman that they were very excited to show.
My oldest has decided to create an educational display, to enter in the fair, that explains why there are no birds at the fair...
The poor farmers here might need to consider growing rice instead of corn this year if the rain continues. Maybe I should just plant mushrooms in my garden since they are flourishing all over the yard. I wish I knew which ones are edible and which ones would kill us.
The one chick that made it...
Hard week.
We lost 14 of the 15 chicks that we kept from the classroom hatch. Long story, suffice it to say that dogs and chickens don't always mix.
They were supposed to be the kids show birds for this year.
So the question becomes, who has some half feathered or fully feathered young...
Day 21 is just an average, sometimes they hatch sooner sometimes later. I would look through this article from the learning center: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/guide-to-letting-broody-hens-hatch-and-raise-chicks
it has lots of good info.
Ran into a fellow 4H mom at the gas station before work and she told me she has heard rumors that we may not be able to show poultry this year.
I get the concern, really I do. But my boys will be very disappointed if that's the case. We have never had a problem at our small county fair with...
@Ron Rose I think I would set a live trap and see what it catches. Or maybe a game camera, so you know what you're up against. The cats in our neighborhood don't bother the chickens, but we've had opossum and raccoon and hawks (not to mention dogs!) all cause problems.
We are beginning the ugly dinosaur stage, but with 12 fewer they will be happy for longer in their 4x4 space.
I'm crossing my fingers that the chicks will be feathered enough and the weather will cooperate to put them out in the hen house by the end of the month, we're supposed to go to Texas...
I'm not happy with Silkies right now. Out of 12 Silkie eggs 8 hatched, one that is obviously vitamin B deficient and now a second one that is lethargic and gaping. None of the other chicks are having any problems, not a pasty butt or a curled toe.
Live and learn I suppose, next time I'll stick...
@Anderson Lowe , We just had to fix a giant water leak ourselves. It almost makes me long for the days when we rented, because then we just called and let someone else handle it.
Oh you all have me antsy to get my garden planted. I have 105 plants in the greenhouse that would just love to get...
We took our classroom hatched chicks to another Elementary today, (the one my sons attend) to meet the third graders. They had lots of good questions and we spent about 45 minutes answering questions and passing around chicks. They really loved the fluffy feet on the Silkies!
When I got ready to...
Our classroom hatched chicks went on a little field trip to another Elementary, where my own sons attend, to visit the 3rd graders. We spent about 45 minutes passing them around and answering questions, they had some very good questions about when they will start to crow or lay eggs and what...
@Henagerie I think you're right, it just thew me that it looked so different than the rest from that group. I'm excited to see what it feathers out to look like. My oldest named it Fluffy :)
So we incubated what were supposed to be Silkies, Ameraucanas and RIRs. but I ended up with "one of these chicks is not like the other ones" So with no fluffy feet and too yellow to be a RIR, I wonder if we could have gotten a stray something else?
I'm going to post to the "what's my Chick?" thread too but I'm confused by this one. We had Silkies (which he is too big to be) RIR's (which he is too yellow for) and Ameraucana (but he doesn't look like the rest of those). Maybe we had a different egg mixed in on accident?
No fluff on his...
Everyone is home, including the incubator with about a dozen left. I may not get another single chick, but it won't be from lack of trying. When I got there to pick them up, one was zipped but not hatched. He was all dried out, so I helped him finish. I can still tell which one because he's...
