UPDATE: I put the eggs under my broody. She hatched all of them. The first one died - looked smashed like she may have stepped on it but the other four are a week old now and flourishing. Glad I made the call to turn them over to her - she just wanted some babies! :)
Thanks for the info! I will get a thermometer and test the incubator but if it's the problem I can't go out and buy a new one today. My only worry with putting these 5 eggs under the one who has eggs is that she will then have 11 eggs and honestly I'm not sure she can cover them all. :o I think...
I understand. I've put many newly purchased chicks under broody hens and it's always worked out fine. However, I want to put the eggs from the incubator under my broody because I'm a little worried about the hatch. I started with 22 eggs in the incubator and am down to 5 viable eggs. :( The...
Hi all! I have eggs in an incubator that I'd like to put under my broody hen tomorrow. Tomorrow night will be day 18 and time for lock down if I keep in the incubator. The only reason we even have them in an incubator is because we only had one broody when we purchased eggs and I put all the BCM...
Here are some pics of mine that I've been told today are blue wyandottes. I purchased them in August as well from TSC being labeled as gold laced, but as you can see that wasn't the case. I have a gold laced hen so glad these turned out as they did - I think they are just gorgeous! I also have...
Well I didn't even know what I had....as they were labeled wrong. But out of the 10 assorted barred rock, americanas, these and a sultan, we have 7 left and they are ALL pullets. I think the barred rocks were labeled as pullets (but my memory isn't great), so we got lucky with the rest. I'm...
I got these from Tractor Supply 4 months ago. They were labeled as golden laced wyandottes. Apparently that was wrong. Which is perfectly fine with me because I have one of those and I LOVE the colors of these girls!?! I have included many pics to help give help for identity. Also, after all...
Hi there! Sorry for late reply. I honestly think that my problem was gape worm. After I wormed them the gurgling went away. I did treat their water for a short time. I did have one of my large RIR hens that ended up dying...she was still having problems and I think she got too hot one day and...
Hey there! Saw your reply on this thread and that you use EOs on your chickens a lot. I love doTerra and I have a ton of oils. Just wondering all the ways I can use them for my chickens. I have one hen with a bad case of bumblefoot right now. We have been soaking her feet in an antibiotic...
Gotcha! Thanks for the advice. I think for now it might be best to just try and break her broodiness. I've read how to do that so maybe that's what I'll try. It will be cooler her for several days with the rains here in Texas so that should help as well....from what I've read.
I have a broody partridge cochin that has been broody for a while. My hubby doesn't want me buying chicks or fertile eggs to put under her. He prefers I use what we have. I have some Americanas he likes that I may want to breed with a certain roo (named Speckle). I know I have to put the roo...
I put chick under it's actual mom and watched a while last night. She took it in and wasn't pecking at it. I put them in an isolated cage inside the coop with little bowls of food and water. When I put the food in the hen started calling for baby to eat and it did. They sat there along side one...
I have the little one in the house with me in a box. I put a heating pad in one side covered with a towel (double layered), two little stuffed animals, a mirror, chick starter and water. It already ate a little bit and drank. I sure hope the mom or the other broody takes it back without pecking...
We only let her hatch out one because we don't want/need any more chickens right now. She has been broody a while and I thought heck, mine as well let her have one.
