Someone on another thread said maybe a silver birchen for color. After Googling, this does seem to be her color, though it seems to be on multiple breeds. I saw a picture of a silver birchen Maran and it seems very similar, especially with the black legs. It is not laying yet. Hopefully next...
I just looked at Birchens. This does appear to match! It also appears a variety of chickens have this color pattern. But it’s nice to have a description for her! Thanks!
It looks like you have two or three Americana types? They are nice looking, but lousy layers! I have two, the only ones that lay pastel colored eggs so I know when they are or aren’t laying.....I get very few eggs from them....none for months on end!
My experience is, once they start fighting, they don't stop for very long. I had three roo brothers that hatched last spring...all was fine until about 2 weeks ago when two started fighting...blood everywhere. I broke it up and they got along for a few days, then it started again between the...
Bird dogs are not necessarily a bad choice. We have a Viszla, who my husband uses for pheasant hunting, and he does not touch the chickens when they are free ranging. He is a VERY intelligent dog and just seems to know they are off limits. In fact he tries to avoid them because he has been...
I always am reading about how roosters "protect the flock". I was wondering if that pertains to fox and coyote or what? We have lost multiple hens to fox and coyote and they did not have a rooster with them. I now have three rooster(brothers) that I have let free range for over a month...
My biggest con on having a rooster is what they do to the hens. I had one rooster and 10 hens that lived in about 200 sq. ft of space. He bred some of them so many times they lost all their feathers on their backs and tops of their wings. Not only does it look terrible but I live in Minnesota...
I tried keeping one rooster with my ten hens this past year, but it got to the point where half the hens were missing most of their feathers off their backs and tops of wings. We live in Minnesota where it gets to -20 degrees in the winter so I can't risk having naked chickens this winter! Mr...
We are down to just 6 two year old laying hens, and we like them too much to get rid of them!! I would like to get a few chicks this spring, but I wonder if you can put them together at some point, and if they will get along. How old do the new pullets have to be before you would even...
I have a hen that had a little "poopy butt" recently...didn't think much of it...Today I went out and her whole back end was wet and black and crawling!!! I hosed it off and found a large wound just below her vent about three inches round. It was soooo gross, full of maggots that did not want...
