I have 8 Red Stars and they are 24 weeks. They look very much the same as yours. Only one of mine has started laying, five days so far. I'm still waiting on the other 7.
I have the same concern. I have four cats and a dog. The dog can not be trusted as she is a bird dog, chases anything that moves. Of the cats, two are house cats and wouldn't know what to do with a chicken unless it came out of a can. The other two are hunters. They will bring back mice...
It is funny that you mentioned your father-in law. My Red Stars are now 19 weeks and could start laying any day now. This is my first time BYC and am checking every day. A few days ago I was checking the nests and found an egg. I was very excited, telling the kids, the wife, etc. When we...
MRSGIBBER
I have the same issue. I have 8, 15 week old who like to sleep in the nest boxes with the pine shavings.
They are not quite ready to lay, but I am worried that they will be in the habit and will not use the roost.
I will try the golf ball ploy as we live near a golf course and have...
I have had my 8 Productiuon Reds for just one week now and I have been giving them some fresh picked alfalfa. They love it. The first cut of hay was two weeks ago and the young alfalfa that is just coming back was just the ticket.
I will be trying some of the other suggestions on the list...
Thank you all for your help. They are getting more comfortable. They are roosting and getting in the coop by night fall without any problem now.
Now I am seeing some assertive behavior from some of them while others are more docile. How will I know if I am having a problem with aggression...

I just received 8 Production Reds that are 3 1/2 months old. They ate and drank well. When it came time to enter the coop, they seemed to stall at the door. They stayed huttled on the floor. My roosts are at 18 inches and 30 inches off the floor. Is this the problem, or are they just not...
I would agree with the posts that suggest doing a search for some free plans on the web. I did both, purchase plans and searched for free ones. The ones I purchased were no better than the free ones so save your money. What I ended up doing is developing my own plans after looking at many...
I am just finishing the coop and starting on the run. I am wondering if it is better to have feed and water in both the coop and the run or just the coop? I am also wondering if I have two different feed and water containers if I do use both locations if that will confuse the hens? Thanks.
I am just finishing my 4x6 coop and I live in Upstate New York where it can get very cold. I put in two double pane low-e windows. I will have a 4x8 covered run and will add 3/4 inch foam insulation to the coop walls, floor, and roof. I was looking at 8-10 hens however, it looks like I should...
