Builders sand, from our local mulch place, we get about 1/2 a scoop in our little dump trailer. Then another right before winter.

I use sand, my soil here in North Carolina is mostly clay. The sand has been great for my garden. Sand drains well, dries fast. I just use a scoop to strain the poop, and add additional sand when it starts to get low. Works great for me.

Welp I did it, I moved them to the coop. Did not go well, so I took part of the run and housed them separate. Old Rubbermaid tub for house and they can look at the older sisters without getting pecked!

I have 3 CQ’s that I got about 4 weeks ago, pullets just reaching laying stage (1 lays). I have 6 chicks that are 5 weeks old. Can I move them into the coop with the 3 older ones? I am hearing 2 weeks of getting used to each other. I don’t really have a way to keep them separate. Ideas?

UPDATE!! My Easter Egger started laying last week! 6 beautiful green eggs in 7 days! Now if the other 6 would just start!

Update: No eggs while on vacation! Thank goodness. Am opening nest boxes today, with crushed oyster shell and layer feed. So, excited!!

I have 7 pullets that are 18 weeks old. I noticed this morning my Buff Orpington and one of my Wellsummer's combs have turned quite red. I know that this is a sign that they are preparing lay. I haven't noticed any crouching or squatting, but have not spent my usual 1 hour so each evening...

Wow looks great! Nice way to recycle wood. Not to be a downer, but, if you have predators, you may want to upgrade the chicken wire, to hardware cloth 1/2". Chicken wire is to keep chickens in not predators out. I love the green! My coop has green accents! Good luck with your new flock!

They do best when you cook them from room temperature. The reason they are exploding the internal temperature of the egg is colder than the water. Either take them from the refrigerator and put them in really cold water, then start to boil. Do not bring them to a ROLLING boil, meaning once...
