My girls spend a lot of time in the tractor during the day. And I have a 5 gallon bucket nesting box (that took them a while to get used to) that they use when they are our there and not able to access the coop. The rest of the time they free range and the coop is open and available to them.
As far as I know, rose combs belong to Dominiques and single combs belong to BRs. Someone more knowledgeable may correct me, but that's how I tell my girls apart.
Hey they arrived!!! Seemed like forever, as you all know (27 weeks and some change), and I was afraid that since the days were short and the temps are cold(er) that we would be waiting until spring before these girls gave us anything.
Came home and went to go clean out the coop. The boxes...
I just started my flock in July here in NC, apparently just before they enacted this registration procedure. I did "need" to apply for a permit (like a dog permit) for the city, and due to HOA complications did just to make sure I had i's dotted and t's crossed. But I haven't heard anything...
Well stated! Not to mention the fact that "organic" and "free range/cage free" labels on food and particularly eggs does not always mean what most people are lead to believe that it means. Growing veggies and fruits, raising animals for food is not just about being "organic" but as you said...
Maybe a flame thrower. :)
Actually we are having the same problem except for the trying the DE part. Was just about to do that. Bummed to hear it didn't work for you, but since we have it we will still try it. I'm interested to hear what has worked for others.
Ours have done the same thing. Every once in a while one starts to darken and then turn red while on the plant. We have eaten them and not noticed much of a difference.
First year gardening and first year with chickens (six weeks actually). So the garden is more mature than the birds right now. We started off with several lettuces and kale which took off and we couldn't harvest, eat, or give away fast enough. :) Now we have tomatoes, tomatillos, jalapenos...
jackieo: definitely crazy chicken lady. But then we all need some sort of designation as crazy around here. Just a few I've taken in the few weeks we've had our girls:
My math won't work out so well. 4 chickens ( to start)+ more chickens = 62 angry neighbors + 1 angry wife = 0 houses + 0 family + 4+chickens
Chickens math isn't worth it ...right now...in this neighborhood
Didn't I read somewhere that hens on occasion can vocalize much like a cockerel? Someone with more experience can speak to the validity of that. Too new to this to help you on the gender though, I'm still crossing my fingers on my 5 week old first flock, that they are all girls. :)
Finally got the "girls" (still too young to know if we have all hens and the fingers are crossed) outside this weekend full time and boy was I a nervous Nellie all day and all night. They seemed quite content and aside from the heat wave coming back and needing to help them keep cool during the...
