Hello all,
My 4.5 year old hen - an 'Easter Egger' but really just a barnyard mix ;) is displaying 3 symptoms -She seems to have lost her voice. She's not wheezing, just makes squeaky sounds when she tries to cluck - like laryngitis.
She is laying regularly but her eggs have significant calcium...
Hello all,
I'm looking for some expert advice on this bird I ordered. This should have been a Swedish Flower Hen, but I don't know - that crest!
This is not the bird I was expecting - the breed appealed to me for its hardiness, free-ranging ability and intelligence. I know some have crests, but...
I ordered my first four birds from Meyer and they all turned out to be beautiful girls. They are one year old now - great birds. I'm a fan of the hatcheries - I've ordered from Meyer and My Pet Chicken and all the chickens turned out really well - I got exactly what I wanted.
My SS Chickadee is the top girl in my flock. She leads with an extremely gentle hand - er, wing - warning the flock, gathering and protecting the flock and rarely pecking or being bossy. She has a pair of lieutenants to do the dirty work. She allows the lowest bird to eat with her separately...
I loved my Red Star. She was my first hen to lay at 17 weeks and proceeded to lay the biggest eggs of the flocks nearly every day. Very social and funny and active. She livened up my mixed flock with her vibrant personality and brilliant butterscotch color. Unfortunately she met her end to a...
5 of my 10 girls are laying regularly. I found this unusual egg in the coop and don't know who laid it.
Very light tint with dark speckles. The shell was quite thin but the size was large on par with my Red Star who has producing lovely big brown eggs (sometimes with specks) for months.
The late...
I have a mixed sampler flock of 10 - each bird a different breed and they seem to be very happy together. I have a Barred Rock who is smart and ambitious. I also have a Rhode Island Red who has been just fine, a good layer and not as aggressive as some others, including the Barred Rock. I also...
UPDATE
Our egg laying adventures continue. Star, one of my "Little Girls" was the first to start laying at just under 18 weeks. She's a Red Star and totally earns her name - lovely russet eggs every day, always in the nest box. Then she strayed a bit, did't lay in the box, we found one of her...
WEIRDNESS
So strange the morning after I start this thread I get my first egg laying 'incident.' This morning I found an egg in the coop - under the little girls' roost - still whole, and cold, but with a soft shell. Also in the litter under the same roost was the contents of an egg, just loose...
I'm waiting for our first eggs -
I got 4 'big girls' who are 21 weeks right now - a Speckled Sussex, a Rhode Island Red, a Welsummer and an Austrolorp. The RIR and Welsummer have bright red combs, but no laying behavior yet.
I also got 6 'little girls' who are 17 weeks (Barred Rock, Easter...
I ordered six chicks from My Pet Chicken - they all arrived just fine and thrive to this day. They seem like excellent birds and beautiful to boot. Only the Gold Lace Wyandotte is not particularly pretty, but certainly big and healthy. Customer service was very nice - the day of my ship they did...
