Thanks, I know we’ve been giving her the runaround; I appreciate the distinction that she is not currently a threat. They all seem to prefer being together, even if it looks different than our last broody/hatchlings. I will keep an eye out but let them give family life a go!
Our veteran foster mommy hen, (a very spicy barred rock), was killed jumping into the neighbor’s yard last fall (dogs 😢); but when one of our 2 yr olds, a Speckled Sussex started sitting about a month ago, I thought we’d be ready to get her some day-old chicks.
We introduced the hatchlings over...
One day at a time! Water really makes a difference- we had success with scrambled eggs, but if she won’t eat, just keep getting the water in her until she is willing to feed herself. Like one of the others posted about shock, it might take awhile for her to fight for herself.
Nursing a sick...
It looks like you’ve done well for her, considering the circumstances. Just an encouragement to keep her hydrated! We used Bannix on a similar dog-induced injury, with good success, just something to keep her wounds clean, and keeping her calm. Hoping for the best!
We’ve tried some wire frame grasses, but our frames were too small to prevent the girls from digging the roots. Would try that again, or even sprout on the porch away from the chickens; and we also compost in the chicken yard. It uses a lot of hay though, and we still get that commercially...
Hello from Saint Louis! Loving our tiny flock in the backyard! I love all the pictures, need to get better at photographing our girls. Anyone else in the city?
I hope you don't mind my jumping on here; I have been having a similar problem.
After searching around BYC, I am not sure if I should be highly concerned, or just waiting it out. I have two Brahmas that I guess were "treated" for pasty butt at the store, by removing feathers. While one has...
I was actually wondering the same thing: lost a chick due to accident, and placed her into the garbage, feeling like I should have a better plan.
Burial would be less preferable for me, because of our small space/backyard. Is it easy to cremate? I also like the idea of limiting spread of...
Awesome pictures! I love to see someone with a small flock and a blend of breeds. We have 8 girls, 5 breeds; I'm glad yours have been such good friends, and I'll echo, what beautiful girls!
I'm even newer than you ;) and am looking around the site. Wanted to give you a shout out from Missouri, but we're right in St Louis. Just started with a tiny flock of 6 in our backyard (right now in our bathroom as they grow up!).
Hope your loving your rural space, and a new flock of birds...
Australorp would be cool; the pics I saw of Australorp chicks did not look to have the white breast? Does that go away?
Any advice about keeping/rehoming the barred rock? We got 8 for a 6 bird flock as rooster/disease/accident insurance, so we have decisions to make in a couple months...
I...
Last week, our family joined the community of urban chicken keepers.! This comes after about a year of promising our eight-year-old that we could have chicken "maybe one day", and some heartfelt discussions amongst the adults of the family. We were also assured by our friends with more...
Yes, here is the other one ; she is barred; I was wondering that their coloring could be so different! Or thought maybe she would change color later on...
So not a Plymouth Rock, any guess what breed? She is white breasted. Mostly black. I can't imagine she'd be anything exotic from our...
Here's my story:
We just got our first flock (yay!) and purchased our chicks at the farm store. Was planning on Rhode Island Reds, so when they were out, we got the last two Plymouth Rocks. Now, I just found out an hour ago while looking around the site that most Plymouth Rocks are barred...
