I love your animal complex. The decorations are wonderful, so much like a home.

    Decapitated hen

Wow! I had no idea. Our coop is enclosed with thick wire over the top as well as the sides.I have seen a skunk in the yard lately. I couldn't figure out how a raccoon got through the opening, which has been fixed, but a skunk would have fit easily. Poor hen.

    Decapitated hen

Thank you. I think you are right about the raccoon. I found an opening into the run. The hen has been roosting in the doorway of the coop for the last couple of months. I'm closing the coop door into the run tonight.

    Decapitated hen

Thank you. We found the opening and fixed it. I think I'll lock the hens in the coop tonight as a double protection from predators. I think it was a raccoon. They are so clever; I have had them slide the bolts on my rabbit hutches before I changed the locking mechanism.

    Decapitated hen

The New Hampshire Red hen was lying in the middle of the chicken run when I went out this morning to let the flock into the backyard. She was missing her head and part of her breast had been chewed away. The other hens had been out of the coop and in the run for a few hours before I found her...

    Feed Store Chicks

I have been raising chickens forever and have never had a problem with chicks. Last Tuesday, I purchased five chicks from our local feed store: two Wyandottes, one Americauna, one Rhode Island, and one Barred Rock. They all looked healthy. I put them in a cardboard box with plenty of food and...

    DANGIT!! Rats/mice!!!!

I had the same problem. I put out rat traps in places where the chickens couldn't get at them. Caught ten over a couple of weeks and haven't seen any evidence since. I only put out as much food as the chickens will eat in a day. I throw out whatever is left over at the end of the day when I...

    complete newbie

Hi Stephen, The moveable coop is great if you want to use your chickens as animated compost diggers. I have a full run and stationary coop in one section of my yard, but when the garden harvest is in, I take the chickens into different sections of the yard, so they can scratch to their hearts...

    Hello from Martinez

That flock is a group of free range chickens on the Isle of Iona in Scotland. Earlier in the day, we had seen the woman who owned them walking down her sidewalk with a line of chickens following behind her. I couldn't get my camera focused fast enough, so I took a picture of them in the...

    Hello from Martinez

Hi. I have been raising chickens in my backyard for 40 years. We have a small flock, just enough to get eggs for our family. This past summer, I rebuilt and expanded my chicken coop and the run, so I can have a few more chickens. In the new run, the chickens are turning all the kitchen wet...
