Can they go outside? Do they need an electric hen?

That certainly makes things easier! They've had their first trip outside already :)

Can they go outside? Do they need an electric hen?

Yeah? No heat needed at all, just gradual acclimation?

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Hello all! :) First time chick parent here in the UK. My friend incubated us 6 SLW bantam eggs in her incy, alongside some japanese quails. 1 was infertile, 5 developed to hatch day, 4 hatched, and then 1 chick had to be culled at a month old due to developing a beak deformity. Out of the 3...

Can they go outside? Do they need an electric hen?

I have 3 silver laced wyandotte bantams (reasonably sure they are 2 hens, 1 roo) which are now 6 weeks old. Hatched and raised indoors with some japanese quail but are now getting bigger and really need to be outside in the shed which will eventually be their coop rather than in my living room...

Just to add, the bottom of the run panels is solid wood, with the mesh starting about 6-7 inches up.

    gap under run panels

Hi all. A little help please :) Our run is on concrete in our garden. Today we bolted it to the floor. It's very sturdy and nothing is moving it to get under... but there is a gap of up to an inch under the panels. My plan was to have a mix of construction sand, general purpose compost, bark...

    using branches as roosts

I'm using a 7*5' shed as my coop. I have these two branches which I "freed" from a pile of wood in the garden... can I use them as perches? The straight one is 1.5 inches in diameter at the thinner end and 2.25 inches in diameter at the thicker end, the wonky one is 2.25inches in diameter all...

Chicken Coop names: What did you name your coop/coops

It's not finished yet but I'm thinking it might be called The Blue Lacoop Hotel and Spa :)

    Thoughts on coop/run options please!

I traded some work for a covered run a couple of years ago and have just finished putting it up (we knew we were moving house shortly after getting it and wanted to wait until we were in the new place before setting up - we've now been here about 7 weeks). However, we have no coop and are...

    Hello :)

You're right Michael OShay, I could. I've been looking at some farms locally who sell "rare breed" hens, looks like I could get several of the above within about a 20-25 mile radius from my house. I shall keep digging ;)

    Hello :)

Thanks all!! What a lovely welcome! :) I've boggled my brain looking at every kind of black and white chicken that I can find!! I think the biggest factor is going to be what I can actually get my hands on ;) My friend raises quail and has offered to hatch eggs for me if I can't find any...

    Hello :)

Hello all :) I'm Caz, based in Yorkshire in the UK. I've been reading for a while as I've been planning chickens for about the last 2 years!! thought I'd best join so that I can join in and ask various questions I have. I've held off getting chooks so far because we were planning on selling...
