Funny how that works!! I have wanted to get chickens for a few years. I grew up on a farm and wanted my son to have the experience of raising animals for food supply. We already had a garden which gains us squash, corn, canned tomatoes, and various other things to enjoy, but I wanted more...
I have thought about bees too. Although I'm not sure hubby would go for that. He would probably be appointed beekeeper which would not make him so happy.. I'm not inclined to put myself in a position to possibly be stung.
Thanks sarahdell. We have been buying eggs from a local farmer recently as well. Trading sounds like a good idea, but we have told our son if he helps care for the chickens and helps sell the eggs he can have some of the $$.
Mmm.. Fresh berries & honey.
Pretty good size egg for the first one. It's on a saucer, not a full size plate. I hope yours start laying soon. Seems a long time to wait. Patience pays off. :)
Add another excited new egg farmer to the list!! Got our first one today and it's such a neat feeling to be raising animals to provide healthy eggs for my family.
Thanks for the help. I think too he will be a gorgeous bird... I will be sad to give him up. . Luckily the people we plan to give him to are good friends and I hope to get some fertile eggs from him at some point when we are ready for more little ones. They have talked to us quite a bit about...
I showed you this one weeks ago. The general idea then was roo. Still feeling that way. No crowing yet, or male feathering, and doesn't stand tall like a male, but that comb sure is red. Bummer too. Was such a pretty, light colored chick. Picked it up and found pasty butt, almost put it...
I hope you find a way to keep a few of them. I understand where you are coming from. I'm glad you will get to see them weekly at least if nothing else works out. Chances are if the mayor was unable to keep his, you won't either unless something changes. It may also help if you can get the...
Hubby sent me this picture the other day from his phone...
We have chickens in our coop/run that will soon need nesting boxes and he saw this beside someone's trashcan and had an "aha" moment. Modify the shelving unit into nesting boxes. Problem was, he drove the car that day, but somehow he...
Beautiful! I always wanted a greenhouse myself and we never got around to that project ... I'm thinking it would have ended much like yours, not utilized fully. Great repurpose of a beautiful little building and landscape.
Thanks junebuggena. I am feeling the same way. Compared to the other chick, it certainly is getting pink. Bummer since I took it home to save it. We have a friend who may take a rooster if we end up with one. Hope he's a pretty one if we're right.
I have a couple of Easter Eggers just 3 weeks old. The lighter colored one (on the left in most pics) is the one in question. Of course, I went and saved it from the feed store since I noticed it had pasty butt and didn't want it to die waiting for help. My luck it's a Roo... I'm holding out...
I'm starting to wish we hadn't jumped so fast to get more but when we saw they had the Barred Rocks my son originally wanted, and "Easter eggers" we couldn't resist. I'm still hopeful my son's favorite original easter egger is a pullet, we haven't heard it crow yet and it's not entirely...
Thanks everyone for your comments back. We are talking about storing our boots inside the door of the barn and changing when we need to during most of the year. Come winter, we will likely keep the boots inside the back door and just deal with the mess on a boot mat.
I had to laugh that a...
I know what you mean by getting hooked. We got several birds, 13 thanks to feed store minimums and them not having the breeds we wanted at the same time. We just figured out last week that we likely have 2-3 roos and one of them being my son's favorite & likely only one of the 3 EE's we had...
Just wondering what all of you do with your chicken/work boots when you come in from making the rounds in the coop?
I will mention that I grew up on a farm and had a "mud room" at the back door perfect for the job, but in my current home have no such luxury. Our coop is inside another...
