when you do get your new ones, be careful what bedding you put them on; for the first week or so we usually use newspaper or feed bags - stay away from shavings until after a few weeks. You gave it your best, sometimes nature wins.
we have had a few roosters try top exterminate chicks in a similar manner. The advice of neosporin/bluecoat and a coop caage is great. The neosporin keeps the wound pliable and allows the skin to move without tearing further - skull will heal over. I would suggest keeping some type of cover...
I have purchased 2 batches of eggs from mamawolf this summer and hatch rates were great! I am very tempted to purchase this batch as well! (oh and this is dfchaser via DH's account, my comp is dead)!
How many eggs are up for auction?
I'm having a hawk problem as well. We've lost about a dozen chickens over the past few months, and have been trying to find the predator. Today while driving up the drive I saw the hawk snacking on one of our laying hens.
My roosters must be dumber than most - either that or I just have too...
Thanks, I appreciate the help. I have a half bag of starter/grower for the peeps that recently hatched, maybe I will start mixing that in with their regular food for added protien. I'm going to look and see if I can find some high protien dry supplement.

I have a few hens that are low on feathers - I know it's from my Roo's - and I'm working on that part of the problem. In the meantime does anyone know a way to encourage feather growth?
Rubbing the stomach on the left side also helps - similar to burping a baby.
An alternative to an incision would be a large guage needle attached to a syringe. Insert needle into stomach and pull plunger up and out of syringe to allow pressure to escape.
Spend time with him and keep burping...
Interesting ... I have a new layer in the flock (a white leghorn). She was given to us along with a few others (there were all kinds of problems with this flock - two of the birds had CRD and passed from it, one of the two with CRD was either so heavy she couldn't walk, or had a bad leg and...
Well, we've been feeding the nutri-drench based water since last night; and giving him the 20% chick feed ... We'll have to check the vitamin levels on what we're using now - but so far it sounds like we've started off right ....
Thanks for the input.

Hello Everyone;
I have a three month old bantam frizzle named Runt. (He was the smallest of his hatch). Last night the other half brought him in for some TLC - seems he got himself stuck standing in the goat's watering bowl (the bowl is only about four inches deep - and had two inches of water...
I like the sound of what DDawn has written. It looks to me to be similar to bumblefoot (an infection in the foot caused by walking in soiled bedding) - sores/burns from the "wet" droppings. I'd start off by cleaning the area as best as possible, treating with a topical antibiotic (as you're...
Well, things are looking up, all three appear to be passing food (at least that's what the droppings say at the bottom of the cage!).
I'm going to continue monitoring them, and keep the olive oil in the water for another day or so (along with the nutridrench and cocci medication). As of lunch...
Thanks for the reply... When I went home at lunch to check on them they were all still alive and kicking - although their crops again were small they still were present. I changed out their water, putting in fresh water with nutridrench, cocci meds, and some olive oil. We'll start there and...
Hi everybody;
I'm trying to save my few remaining bantam's from a recent hatch. About a week ago, I had 15 chicks, they were all doing well and happy. There have been some heavy rains here in the state for the past few days, and suddenly my chicks started to pass. I found one outside in the...
