Well still no idea what breed they are but now I have three. I guess the people across the street bought their children three chicks to play with last week or so and then when they didn't want them anymore they just tossed them out in the alley. 2 of them made their way to my other neighbor's...
I don't think they are rhode island whites. I'm assuming ISA browns because that's what my local tractor supply was carrying for their fall chicks a couple weeks ago and these look to be about 2 weeks old roughly.
I have a suspicion about where they actually came from, there are some people...
My neighbor just found two chicks last night by her back gate so she brought them to me this morning since I'm the only one in the neighborhood who has chickens. Anyone have any idea what breed? Maybe ISA?
Her abdomen was firm and hard but I thought it was just from being backed up with poop. She was alert and bright eyed when she first presented which was about 5 days ago. I started epsom salt soaks and calcium delivered by tubing. She was having some issues defecating and I did a manual probing...
I had a year old crested cream legbar that became eggbound. I tried giving calcium, lubing her vent, and manual removal but she sadly passed away. I decided to do a necropsy myself to see how severe the issue was because I could definitely feel the egg but couldn't ever see it at her vent...
I got a few more pics of them when I put then to bed tonight, the two I'm holding together seem to have larger combs. They are around 5 weeks old now. I couldn't find any juvenile pics online so I've started taking pictures of them more for future record keeping.
I wish I'd read up on this...
TSC and Valley Hatchery have both told me abut the 5% chance of roosters not having headspots. I wish I had known before I bought them because I can not have roosters here without risking my whole setup. If someone files a noise complaint against a poultry owner, code enforcement makes you get...
So TSC and Valley Hatchery told me about the 5% chance of unmarked males being sold as pullets. I had contacted Bally because they too are selling discounted sapphires, they will give a refund on the chicks but that doesn't help because I can't keep roos. I really fin it irritating
They are supposed to be a sex link but apparently there's a 5% chance of roos having pullet markings. Which I found out after I bought these. So that's why I'm concerned about the combs being larger on the 2. I've not had sapphires before. I have a mixed flock of pure strained breeds but no...
I sure hope so. I've had to rehome or dispatch roosters every year since I started with chickens. My city ordinances don't allow roos and while I have neighbors that do have roosters I don't want to risk losing my whole flock to a noise complaint.
So I impulsively purchased 4 Sapphire Gem chicks from TSC. I generally don't go to TSC for chicks but these were $.50 each and I couldn't resist. They were supposed to all be pullets and had puller markings. But now that I'm 4 weeks in, I see 2 have larger combs than the other two. But I'm...
So I had some black and blue copper maran eggs that set under some broody hens. I had 6 hatch out, 2 black, 3 blue, and one that was supposed to be black hatched out white! The person I got them from only had black and blue, there were no white birds in her flock. Is this normal? She doesn't...
Looks like I needn't have worried when I picked her up to put the vaseline on she popped out into my hand. Now she's back under mom to fluff up and join her hatchmates.
Thanks!
I have a hen sitting on eggs and so far I've had 3 chicks and 1 duck hatch out and they are great but I've got another egg that has pipped and the chick has popped off about half of the shell but the membrane is still intact except for the tiny hole that the chick poked through initially. The...
So all of my other hens have started laying but not this one.
