    diarrhea

Thanks! Since they don't act sick, it is reassuring to know that it is probably nothing too serious. They do drink lots of water, although here in Kodiak Alaska we have not had a very warm summer. We'll see. hr:/

    diarrhea

We have 6 hens, very sweet, about 2 years old. Three Rhode Island Reds and three black Austrolorps. One of them has had diarrhea since we got them in June from some friends. They all behave and look very healthy. All are awesome egg layers. Is there anything I can add to their feed or...

Countdown begins! Day 1 (Will Update)

I can feel your excitement! I have a hen who has been setting on 8 eggs for 18 days. I am so anxious you'd think I was the one having babies!! She's in a nest that is too high for the babies to be hatched in. Should I move her now? Or wait until they hatch? Who knows? hr

    What is "egg bound?"

The update on my sweet red hen is this: I didn't keep the liver colored discharge. If I had, perhaps a lab test could have been done on it to see if, indeed it is cancerous, or a malignant tumor of some kind. The vet did indicate that the liver-colored mass does sound like cancer. I have a...

    What is "egg bound?"

This morning I found another small liver colored discharge. One book I have for reference suggests cancer?? I have decided to take her to the vet. The bill-paying side of me says there is no chicken worth the cost, especially here on an island where everything costs sooo much. But she is...

    What is "egg bound?"

I tried holding her with a steamy towel under her, lubed my finger after a while and felt around. I couldn't feel any egg at all. Then out came a lump about an inch in diameter, reddish, like a blood clot or something. It almost has the same color as beef liver. I did feel another little...

Wow! You all are great. I did go to that link, and am encouraged that maybe I have some info to guide me. Well, it'll be a few hours before I'll be able to go home and try all of this great advise. Wish me luck! And THANKS!

    What is "egg bound?"

I really am new at navigating this Forum, so bear with me. I brought my red hen into the house yesterday. She was happy, though very quiet, and drank lots of water. I also gave her some yogurt and oatmeal which she ate right up. Her bum is tight, that's why I was wondering. Does "egg bound"...

    What is "egg bound?"

I have a 3 year old Rhode Island red hen who is sleeping on the floor instead of roosting. She moves around, but much more slowly than the other hens. Her back end is very tight, like she is stuffed full. Her poop is normal, although it seems smaller than the other hens. I read the words...

    Would Someone Call Jack Frost?

Jack Frost is presently visiting Kodiak Alaska! The water in our coop had ice on it this morning! We had our first few snow flurries on Saturday. We had a really cold winter, last year, and it looks like we're in for another cold one. While I'm here, I have a question: Last winter, with...

    EAGLES!!!

I lost three chickens this past week to some kind of hawk, a neighbor said it was a goshawk. One hen survived, perhaps because she was too fat to fit through the small hole in the fence covering their pen. She is pretty torn up, and I wonder if it is worth trying to nurse her. I only warn you...
