    Egg white question?

This space is filled with liquid, very curious, not the air sac - you can see it when the egg is cooked especially when hardboiled. It is as if part of the egg the size of a pencil eraser did not cook and is filled with fluid. Watery like fluid. THe eggs are excellent tasting, shape about...

    Egg white question?

I have 25 RIR's they are currently molting and have been laying since last December. THey are free range 10:00 AM until dark. Fed grain, blue seal or layena layer mix. Most of the eggs when hard boiled have a section/hole that looks like a small cavern filled with liquid. Water like liquid...

Roost diameter too small for cold weather?

I have used 2x4 or 3" limbs from trees with equal success. I think the prefer the trees so I rounded the corners off the 2x4 and cut them in half. My roosts are 18" off the ground and level about 16" apart. They work perfectly, are simple to remove all at once when removing the litter from...

Regarding cold weather flock maintenance, Jim the farmer says:

Jim is absolutely correct about winter and how animals keep themselves warm. SImple is better and my 25 birds made it through a very snowy (30Inchs) and a very cold "-" single digits with windows open, roof vents all open and they survived well. Never even a sneeze and chickens do sneeze. I...

    Minimizing trauma of wing clipping

I would suggest not humanizing them too much, you seem to be ready to clean their ears with a Q-tip, but I would wipe their butts with a warm moist towel every time I picked them up. This will ensure no pasty butt! BACK TO YOUR QUESTION: Clipping wing feathers is like cutting your nails. Cut...

    When To Clean

I have had my deep litter in the coop since December. Litter is still dry, the poop is drying out in about 1-2 days, and there is no smell of ammonia. I'm currently planting our fall garden crop and will soon remove all the litter from the coop and spread it on the garden. That will be about...

HAVIHART no, HAVIGUN or HAVICONEBEAR - Both kill swiftly and finally. I have trapped 4 coons with conibear trap...

Cleaning out brooder waterer 100 times a day

Put the (I assume quart waterer) up off the base of your brooder floor. Move all shavings aside and raise it up with wood squares until the birds can get a drink and not fowl (sic) the water.

How big does a chicken need to be that it isn't HAWK BAIT anymore?

Forgot to mention the presence of a large murder of crows. They keep after the hawks and owls, but more important I believe is that the birds are full sized RIR's. Hope luck holds out as it has in the past. Smaller chicks need complete protection. Good Luck!

    Hanging feeders?

Quote: Ditto! Hang both above the height of the chickens back in the tractor. Keeps everything cleaner and out of the way of any rodents. Have water 16" off the floor in the coop(4" termite block on top of 12" block). Use the block to house 100 watt bulb in the winter to keep water from...
