    Cloistered with my chickens

Sorry for your loss. Things happen, if there’s any lessons to be learned from her passing then take them on board and go forward with that knowledge. Keeping animals means there will be losses. It’s sad every single time.

Loss of balance and hot feet

An injury then is most likely. And now she’s walking funny to protect herself. If that’s what it is chickens heal really well. Quiet time with good feed and water and hopefully she’s on the mend. I had a girl attacked by her flock mates about 10 days ago. Brutal beat down. She basically lost her...

Loss of balance and hot feet

I hope she’s feeling better soon. I’ve never seen that kind of walk before. I was gonna suggest checking that she hadn’t gotten her upper legs tangled in something. It kinda looks like shes trying to walk with her shoelaces tied together!! Poor lil lady.

Duck with feathers missing on back of neck

Are they in a mixed flock? I have a guinea that relishes sneak attacks and grabs a beak of feathers just for fun.

What kind of grass to grow?

I dream about a mulberry tree. There was one in a neighbors yard when I lived in the city. We were cursed by its berries dropping. It ruined our patio and the cars on the block were plastered in purple poo. But now that I have chickens !!! I would love that tree. Constant food, lovely shade.

    Help! Duckling hatching gone wrong!

I let my duckies swim for a few minutes a day once they are about a week old. It’s true they can’t stay dry for long and they will get waterlogged. But they loved sink time til they grew too big in about 20 minutes. I’ve never seen a creature grow sooo fast

    Help! Duckling hatching gone wrong!

Unmedicated Chick starter with brewers yeast or even nutritional yeast. Niacin is super duper crucial for ducks. They grow ridiculously fast and are very heavy so their bone development is everything. Niacin and calcium helps with that. I dare say I would put it with the chicks in the absence of...

Will a fox get through a double layered predator apron of chicken wire?

He would run then turn and look at me. I turned the air blue on many occasions. Running through the woods barefoot. Glad I live in the middle of nowhere. Hubby got the money shot when the fox found my guineas nest. He was busy eating eggs and never saw it coming.

Will a fox get through a double layered predator apron of chicken wire?

I couldn’t believe my eyes with that damn fox. Once he got the taste he was around every single day. I was doing all outside chores with a .22 on my back 🙄. Crazy. I fired at him at 9am 2:30 pm 4pm. My kids would scream “fox o clock” You would think the chickens would fly up but they panic and...

Will a fox get through a double layered predator apron of chicken wire?

I never saw a fox near my property until this one. He got 6 of my neighbors chickens in one week. He ran through my yard straight towards me chasing my guineas as they flew over my head. I wouldn’t have ever believed the brazenness of it if someone told me. It ran right between my 100lb goat...

Will a fox get through a double layered predator apron of chicken wire?

I’ve never lost a bird at night. A neighbors dogs busted through fence once and got 2. A hawk got one, a possum got 2 chicks through the fence one evening and a fox got through cattle panels with chicken wire attached to it. All day time. The fox made several attempts, I shot at him at least 4...

Will a fox get through a double layered predator apron of chicken wire?

Yeah sorry but chicken wire really is only good for keeping them in. It truly won’t keep out and determined predators. It stretches and the minute it stretches it is weakened. Hardware cloth is very expensive but trust me, doing the job twice or three times is way more expensive. I learned the...

    Snap and lock chicken coop

I started out with one of these. I had 6 hens at the time. They were happy in there, ventilation was actually fine, I kept both vents open all the time. Totally pred proof, I hung their feeder underneath and same, they just roosted in there. Out at dawn. Fast forward, I lost 3 to hawks and...

Brooded within flock experiment going poorly

One of my chickens hatched 3 guinea keets. A possum got 2 and the 3rd drowned in a little duck pond. ☹️

    Shrink wrapped chick

Thanks for responding, it hatched Tuesday. Yeah I think too Fast. Poor little thing, I never thought of that happening when it was hatched by momma. It’s doing much better now. It’s been eating and drinking and seems way more steady on its feet after it’s salon visit. Yes I agree on the paper...

    Shrink wrapped chick

I had my silky Taco sit on a couple of eggs. She evicted 2 but managed to hatch one. A couple days before hatch she sat on the wrong nest. Her egg got quite cool, but it is in the high 70s here. Anyway. It hatched on day 21. However it was the least hearty chick I’ve ever seen. Firstly it’s tiny...
