    Breeding without in-breeding?

Thank you. The spiral breeding is where I got this idea. Unfortunately, I don't yet have guilt-free room for more than two sets of breeders. :( Maybe next year sometime. The spiral breeding makes absolute sense when you start with roosters and hens that have no relation, but my main concern is...

    Breeding without in-breeding?

This spring I bought 2 Delaware breeder hens and a rooster from a local breeder who is now shutting down business. :( He no longer sells Delaware chickens, so I'm thinking it is going to be important that I get another rooster so that I can keep my Delawares going. I've done research, and...

    First-time natural raised chicks

This is all really great info. Thank you! Yesterday, I went ahead and put mama and babies on the ground. They haven't tried to get back up. I have the top of an extra large plastic dog crate in the coop for them to hide in. The hen did that all day yesterday. This afternoon when I went out to...

    First-time natural raised chicks

Thanks for the advice! I have seen those shows about the ducks, just didn't consider chickens would do the same. :) That makes a lot of sense. I considered putting them on the ground myself today, but I'll wait. Do you have any idea how long the hen will wait to leave the nest? It has been...

    First-time natural raised chicks

For the first time, I allowed a broody hen hatch a few eggs for me. I tried setting an area up for her on the ground, but she insisted on nesting in a box that is off tthe ground. The first chick hatched this afternoon, one has pipped, and we're still waiting on the last one to do anything. I'm...

Please help - stick tight flea I think???

Sevin is a poison. I would be very cautious with that. If you have anyway of getting DE and wood ash, I would combine the two, and use it. You can dust them yourself, and you can add it to any dust bathing holes they may have. I would also put DE in their nesting boxes.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

It did mention fresh raw pumpkin seeds... I have used black walnut oil for deforming my dogs. I wonder if that would work on the chickens... Does anybody have experience with this?

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I gave them a wood ash dusting last night. I have decided that they are not fleas, but it is possible that they are mites. I didn't see any bugs crawling on any of them during the bath - nothing around the vents. I went ahead and put antibiotic ointment on their combs and wattles. The rooster...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I just read that giving poultry garlic can cause Heinz Anemia since it is in the onion family. I have never tried it myself.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have a problem. I believe my hens have stick fleas. I've been looking around the forums, and have a plan to help get rid of them. I would love further advice if anybody has some. First of all, I have noticed one of my hens shaking her head every now and then over the last couple of days...

Please help - stick tight flea I think???

I think I'm having the same problem. They are all over my rooster's comb. I have hens shaking their heads now too. I have read many that say extreme dry and heat brings them on, but we just finished record high rains this month with much flooding. I want to treat this in the most natural way...

    Is my chick sick?

Next question. Today, I made a kind of mash out of the chick starter, yogurt, and a little acv. The sick chick loves this, and ate more than I've seen in a while. A few hours later, and he's suddenly pecking at and acting aggressively towards hge healthy chick. Could this be because he's feeling...

    Is my chick sick?

I think my little guy is getting better. The sneezing has slowed down. He went through a time where he seemed lethargic, but today he has been very busy. I gave him a tiny bit of coconut oil a few days ago, and then remembered last night that yogurt is good for them. They didn't like the...

    Is my chick sick?

I'm going to see what I can get as far as grit tomorrow. I'm hoping this is just an immunity thing that he's working on... When we first put the plod in, there were 2 grubs in it. I'm pretty sure they ate them (I didn't witness it), because when I went in later, they were nowhere to be found...

    Is my chick sick?

I have a couple of chicks that are almost 2 weeks old. Last week, I introduced sod to them. Since then, the oldest one (by 1 day) started sneezing. I thought nothing of it until yesterday. When I checked in on them, they were resting, but the one that has been sneezing appears to have a faster...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have sa2 week old chick that I believe has started sneezing about 3 days ago. I wasn't too worried about it until today. I only have 2 at t hi is age. They were both resting. The one that is sneezing seems to breathe at a faster rate than the other one. Is it normal for them to breathe at...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I've been following and reading that giving coconut oil to chickens with Gleet is good for them. My question is, would it be beneficial to give chickens coconut oil on a daily basis, or would this be too much fat for them to handle?

New to Hatching - and chickens

Had to cull #3 today. It just wasn't going to make it. I waited, thinking it was going to get better - and it did seem to be getting better, but this morning when I checked on them, it was lying in brooder. It was chirping, but when I picked it up, it was limp. That was the least fun thing I...

    The Buckeye Thread

I have a question. I just bought hens from a breeder, and he said the hens used to be a darker red, but the sun bleached them out. Can that happen?
