Giving day old chicks to broody hen

Sneak them in around dusk/night time is the perfect time. We had a hen go broody, and she sat on eggs, though none were viable. We picked up 5 Jersey Giant chicks locally, slipped the eggs out, and the babies under her, and by the next day, she was a very proud mama. our broody Partridge Rock...

    Murray McMurray Hatchery

No, there's no marking for any of them, as to breed, or sex. It's one of the fun to figure out things with them. Roo's make it pretty easy, they're usually the slowest to develop feathers, compared to the hens. This was the case especially with my Light and Dark Brahmas, very, very slow for...

    Murray McMurray Hatchery

When I ordered chicks, last year, I also ordered from Murray McMurray. They ship on Friday's. Now, for many in the lower 48 (I happen to live in Alaska) this isn't a really big deal, as the birds arrive Saturday, and you let your post office know you're expecting them, and to call as soon as...

Chicken Breed Focus - Blue Andalusian

Had two of these, an absolutely gorgeous cockerel, and a hen. The cockerel was actually our "free rare chick" from Murray McMurray hatchery when we ordered our meat bird/layer combo. He developed quickly, feathered out just as fast as the hen did. The roo was head of the flock, and sadly...

    Mister Rooster

Hehehe, I crow at mine all the time, specially when they were first starting to crow. Sometimes it seems to encourage them to try their own hand at it. So glad I'm not the only who talks to their birds. :D

    Roosters or hens?

looks like both girls! Congratulations! On the barred rock you can tell, as the dark bars are thicker than the white barring. Heavier white barring is an indication of male. On the GLW the comb is small, and yellowish still, and she's well feathered, my guess would be pullet.

    What breed is "Mr Sexy"

Sorry, looks like you're gonna have to rehome. This looks to be a light brahma rooster, judging by the tail feathers i see, the pointy hackle feathers, and that comb, i'd say someone needs a new home, nice looking Light Brahma though.

Chicken stopped laying eggs - why?

EE's tend to be a little more sensitive to the light changes than some other breeds. I would think it's more related to weather/light changes than anything else. You could try putting a light in the coop, to provide extra hours of light, if you wanted to force winter laying. Many opt to let...

    What breed and gender?

x3 - definite cockerel, and appears to be an EE.

Is our 6 wk old Barred Plymoth Rock a cockrel?

Pullets, of the barred rock variety will appear to be darker barred than the cockerels will. They will also not develop such a large comb, so early on. Sorry to say, the lighter appearance to the barring, and the comb size already, indicate that this is a cockerel. His comb will get larger...

    Rooster or hen

Quote: Sorry bout that, but both of your Light Brahma's are Cockerels. The pea comb is a sure give away, there are 3 rows to the roosters comb, plus i see saddle feathers, and hackle feathers on them that are indicative of cockerels. (i have 3 light brahma's cockerels myself, and 3 light...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I got my first egg today!! My first flock, here in Alaska, just turned 20 weeks old. I "believe", not entirely sure, 'cause I did not see it happen, but I think it was my Cornish Rock hen. She's been doing the submissive pose lately, and I've seen a few of my various roosters mounting her...

    Rooster Confirmation

"LOOKS" to be 3 hens and a roo, from what i can see. Nice little flock. :)

    Light Brahma Hen or Roo?

Definitely a roo. That comb is a dead give away. Nice looking Light Brahma rooster you have there though. :)

Help me settle a debate with my husband!

x2. Sorry for your poor run of luck on the rooster/hen count. :(

Did you build your own coop or buy one already made?

We built ours. Neighbors call it the Little Red Cabin.

    Brahmas

Mine are all still pretty young, hatched in May, so just 4 months old right now, so I can't personally say how they are once they really get going. But so far, only one of my Light Brahma's has taken to crowing, it is really not a very loud noise at all. The other two Light Brahma's have not...
