"The Chick En Coop"
The beginnings
The base of the coop was contructed of recycled fencing and 4X4's . The 4x4's were only 4 ft long so I ended up splicing them together with scrap 2X4's . The base frame is about 5 1/2 foot tall. I added 2 more feet on the right side of the picture to produce...
I have a cookie tin heater that shows no ice in the single digits and wind chill below zero. I use a galvanized feed dish I bought at walmart for $3 that fit perfectly on top of the cookie tin. I placed a large empty #10 can in the middle of it with rocks and pieces of welded wire to prevent...

I have 13 hens and 2 roos and I go through 50# 10 days to 2 weeks. I do give them some oat grain to scratch on. I only let them out in the run when the sun comes out and they rarely free range this time of year.
You need to hook the fan up to a 12volt power adaptor. Some of the people find one of the extra chargers they have laying around that has a 12 volt rating. You will need to cut and splice the wires from the 12 volt charger and hook it to your fan separately. You CAN NOT hook to the fan to the...

I bought 4 of these nipples from Tek Supply. I use them inside the coup but have a 5 gallon waterer in the run. I find they prefer the 5 gallon waterer over the nipple type. They do use the nipple version mostly when the other is empty. I question whether they are really getting enough...
I finally went the dollar general and bought a tin. Great idea. I took apart a little night stand light that had a chandelier bulb in it. I drill out the side and used the thread rod from the lamp and feed it though the hole with nuts on both side of the tin and I added a rubber grommet just in...
All you are getting is a thermostat and a cheap thermometer. The thermostat will work for what ever size bator you build. I have not seen this type of thermostat before. Most people just buy one at the home improvement store for $9. I personally wouldn't buy it for the price he is asking.
anyone have experience with the accurite digital temp/humidity unit. I bought at walmart for 7.99. The unit has a magnet on the back so I have it on my fridge right now but hope to use it in the spring for incubator.
I received this pic from my sister titled "Reasons why you should carry a camera " This pic was one of many but this one the only one that was chicken related. I just had to post it.
We had snow a couple of weeks ago here. About 8+ inches. It didn't accumulate that much because the ground wasn't cold enough. The chicks seemed to like it. I have netting over the run and the snow collected on it until the netting simply tore loose and caved in.
They all seem to be handling...
I think they are innovative and for the most part functional. It goes to show you that you can make a coop without the expense of hundreds and some cases thousands of dollars.
