    Very unusual, need help...

My 10 month old polish hen seems to have something wrong with her eye, slightly swollen/bumpy lid. In addition, her comb and waddles seem to be irregularly red, splotchy. I took her to the vet who thought maybe she is just getting picked on by the other hens. I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know if chickens and goats can co-habitate?

Thank you all for your very helpful replies. Just what I suspected, they'll probably get a long just fine, provide lots of entertaining moments, but they would all be best served with their own space at night and no access for the goats to the chicken food. Just what my husband didn't want to...

Does anyone know if chickens and goats can co-habitate?

We have a large aviary coop, pentagon shape open on three sides with 15 chickens. We want to get 2 pygmy goats in the spring. Was wondering what you think about the goats using the coop to sleep at night. During the day the whole gang will be free ranging but at night they will be enclosed...

Is there something else to do besides a saddle?

I really don't want to have to separate them, permanently or get rid of him. He is a gentleman in all other ways and the hens seem to be happy having him around. If this doesn't get any better, maybe I can replace him with another one...

Is there something else to do besides a saddle?

hmmmm, can't do that. My kids would never forgive me. Will he eventually find another focus of his affections? He really is doing a number on her, she has stopped laying now because I think she is so stressed out from being chased by him all the time.

Is there something else to do besides a saddle?

I have an overmated chicken, getting her a saddle. Just wondering if there is a way to deter the rooster from mating her so much. Thought of putting something on her back that might offend him. Any suggestions?

    Can chickens eat soybeans?

My chickens LOVE soybeans. They fight over them and even remove them from the shell. It's hysterical to watch...

Hen With Impacted Crop, Need Advice and Support.

Personally I would not give my chickens bread when they are having crop problems. When the crop is not functioning as well as it should be, the last think I would introduce to it is anything that has yeast e.g. bread. I with hold food for 24 hours, only offering fresh water with probiotics...

gigantic crop - don 't think it's impacted

Usually with recurring crop problems, there is either an underlying problem (genetic, tumor?) or problem with their intestinal tract which is effecting the function of their crop. What are you feeding your chickens?

    moulting????

Not sure, but it doesn't really look like she is molting. Some parasites are only visible with a magnifying glass. I would rule out mites or some other parasite and treat her. Especially since she has scabs. Is anyone else picking on her?

Please help, hen walking lopsided... something not right

Diana, I read that report from the Mayo clinic, too. My experience with them is that their information is usually very conservative. I don't want to experiment with my chickens and I know what is good for humans is not necessarily good for chickens. However, I am very curious because I believe...

Is This Impacted Crop? *UPDATE* She's Gone.....

Do either of you feed your chickens cat food? I had numerous crop problems when I was feeding my hens extra protein through the winter - organic cat food. A chicken vet out here told me that cat food is one of the worst things for chickens because their system can't digest it fully which results...

    tar-like poop

Could be related to something they ate or drank (dark?) or it could possibly be old blood. One of my chickens had a serious problem which resulted in her bleeding internally and her poop looked VERY dark and tar like. The vet was the one who diagnosed this. This is not necessarily what is going...

Please help, hen walking lopsided... something not right

I am not sure what they got into but it seems to have been something they ate. Both have recovered quickly (benefits of knowing your flock and reacting quickly). They do not have access to a compost pile; however there are other things that they may come across out there while free ranging...

Please help, hen walking lopsided... something not right

She continues to be fine but now another one is acting funny, puffed up feathers, quiet, very loose stool. She is in the house now and I am monitoring her. Have the feeling it's intestinal. Restricted all food, only giving avia charge and yogurt with extra probiotics for the next 24 hours. Maybe...

Chickens all have big air bubbles on their necks - right at crop -

Could it just be that their crops have food in them? When they have had a lot to eat the food collects in the crop until it goes to the gizzard. As they get older, their capacity to hold more food in their crop increases often resulting in them looking like they have golf balls in their neck...

Please help, hen walking lopsided... something not right

Today she seems to be fine - eating, normal poop, acting like usual. Go figure... I wondered about the possibility of a mild stroke. Possible with chickens? If tis was the case, I am assuming she would continue to have problems, yes?

Please help, hen walking lopsided... something not right

I am not sure if she is having any problems laying, doesn't see to be although hasn't laid today. She is inside, eating, preening, drinking (avia charge). I don't see any continued off balance behavior. I will continue to monitor her closely for the next 24 hours.

Please help, hen walking lopsided... something not right

Went to check on my girls this morning, one of my hens (1 year old) was walking kind of lopsided, staying in the coop and looked like she might fall over. I brought her in the house and set her up in the kitchen so I could monitor her. I didn't find any injuries, she does not seem lethargic, and...
