Comment by 'conny' in article 'Chicken Laws and Ordinances (And how to change them)'

A friend of mine forwarded me this information: https://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB1620/id/1585712 The bill SB1620 states that everybody in Texas can have up to 6hens. Even in masterplan subdivisions (which I am) we can raise some. I live in Pearland, TX and would like to know: is this bill really...

    Best treatment for lice?

Gotta pick up this topic again. I have a dust bath for them in the run. They bath in sand/DE/ wood ashes mix every day and yet my 4 girls are infested. I think they got it when I changed my food. Is that possible that they are missing a mineral or vitamin to repel pests like that? One of the...

Barred Rock and EE Laying Ages???

My EEs are now 36 weeks old and one is still not laying . The other one has big blue eggs and started about 5-6 weeks ago. The "baby" of the flock likes to separate herself and tries to get in the house every chance she gets. (She waits on the door mat). BUT at least she doesn't crow. But 36...

Tiny tiny black bugs in the chicken coop, help!

I know the last post was a while back, but out of curiosity: did you get rid of the bugs? I discovered these tiny tiny beetles/bugs in the hen house on the poop tray first. I had DE on it but those bugs didn't seem to mind. I cleaned it every few days and the hens are free of them so I didn't...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Thanks Don! This is a lot of great information! I live in south Texas and it seems to be hard to get some local non GMO grains here around, but I will venture out and search online. I discovered lots of tiny little bugs in my nonGMO layer feed, which came in the bag. I don't know if the chickens...

    Growing fodder for chickens

What kind of vitamins and minerals do you feed them? And how much garlic and cayenne and ginger is a good amount for healthy hens? I'm just trying to learn.

    Probiotics

Thanks for your reply! I read also about fermenting with the yogurt whey. I think I will try to mix the leftover pellets with that to ferment. How much yogurt is enough? Do you mix it in their food? So far my hens look at it and then at me and then turn around and leave.

changing from open water to nipples water system

I switched them to nipples at 4 weeks. But since they are outside foraging all day (I have 2 water bottles with nipples hanging out there) I never see them drinking from them. They prefer to find some rain water puddles if they can. I am worried that they get enough water, but then they are...

    Probiotics

Is it enough to give the chickens ACV in their water? Does that count as a probiotic? Or do you give them something else in addition like Big Ole Bird? I have been reading threats about yogurt and I guess that the opinions are pretty much divided in half. Some say "go for it" some say "dairy is...

Feed and humidity......ya'll help me out!

I have the same problem, living in Houston. With the heavy rains and humidity it is impossible to keep the food dry and flys away! I am only feeding them now on the back porch and clean up after a couple hours and they can forage in the garden. I wonder if feeding only grains in the feeder and...

Ok. Thanks. I still have a lot of starter anyway. Enough for a second batch for sure. I can switch back easily.

    Layer feed

Hi. I'm new to the backyard chicken raising. I pretty much go on recommendation and of course all information I can find here I was told to switch my 6week old to H and H layer feed. They are free ranging in the garden all day and don't eat a lot of their food anyway. But: if the feed gets wet...
