Just as a followup - I have been moving the pen twice a day (5:30am and 6pm) and the situation re smell has been manageable. I've also taken the food troughs away before the second move so they have clean grass for the night.
The grass does absorb what the pen puts down (just a regular front...
Did an 8-lb rooster earlier today
(http://newlyplanted.blogspot.com/2009/07/and-then-there-were-thirty-four.html , again following the directions - it is taking way too long for me I obviously need practice.
Are there any more details on exactly how to do the cut around the vent? I'm having...
Well, I just did my first chicken and followed the steps listed here - definitely wasn't able to follow all the steps for gutting but was able to take out the insides, open up the craw/gizzard, see the liver/heart/bile duct, etc.
Roasted the (small) chicken last night..was quite tasty
Again...
jaku: could you elaborate on brand, etc? I'm in Canada - not sure what TSC is (shopping channel?)
Even pics and a name would work; I could try to find something similar up here.
Rolsjo: Very handy, thank you That is the kind of guideline I was looking for. I will sit down and do some calculations myself to see if I'm on track (or wayyy over)
I think giving them food for 12 hrs/day makes sense too; I think I have been keeping them fed closer to 15 hrs/day - filling...
My chickens are going through an insane amount of food (it seems .. I have no frame of reference). I couldn't find anything on the FAQ for this site or searching, so I will ask here
Is there an average amount of food a chicken should eat / be given each day?
The thirty-five White Rocks I've...
She's been doing ok for a couple days by herself in the shed. She is moving around a little bit, and appearing to eat/drink. It definitely doesn't seem like an infection, just a leg issue. Will continue to watch her
I'm pretty sure that is for layers, not broilers. Believe me, the broilers currently have more space than they know what to do with. They just sit all day long and eat.
Also, note that this is a movable pen, not a run. They are on fresh grass twice/day now instead of tearing up the same strip...
JohnL11935: Salatin's stocking density was almost 90 birds in a 10x12 pen. I thought i was leaving plenty of space I had fed them cut grass/dandelions when they were in the brooder and they went crazy for it; I thought that meant they would get it themselves outside. Apparently not I will try...
She made it through the night; I'm really starting to think it's a leg problem. She's occasionally hobbling around to turn herself and will eat when I go visit / actually feed her myself.
Have noticed similar-looking poo in the tractor now; will have to do some research to see if it's a sign of...
I've got 35 White Rocks in an 8x8 pastured poultry pen (Salatin model). They are 4.5 weeks old and have been outside for 5 days, with no signs of scratching at all. They occassionally pick at the grass (and maybe insects) but that's it.
As a result, the manure is just getting matted onto the...
Eek! I am not that point yet. Of course, it's also my first year raising chickens at all so I guess I'm stupidly hopeful
The "quarantined" bird seems to be doing worse/better depending on when you check on her. I'm guessing there's little hope, so I'm trying to make her comfortable and...
Yes, they only got one full day of sun when they went out, followed by cloudy/rain, rain, and now it's getting nice again. I've moved the sick-looking one to the shed with her own food/water. Will see about Sulmet too.
