Just wanted to say thanks for everyone's advice! I let him loose with the hens a couple of days ago, and everything is copacetic. I've already seen him doing his job at breaking up a spat between hens. Thanks again!
We're in the process of introducing a new roo to our existing flock of 8 hens. (He's already through quarantine.) At the moment, he's in a large dog crate inside the run. Most of the hens are alternately curious about him or ignoring him, which seems like a good sign. But there's one hen (Moo)...
It's possible? I'm not sure exactly when she died. I took her out when I found her yesterday morning, so they didn't have access to her all day, but it's possible she was gone earlier in the day on Sunday.
Thanks. ❤️ I checked as best I could, though it was difficult because rigor had set in...
We lost one of our hens two nights ago. I found her under the roost board in the coop in the morning. I hadn't noticed anything wrong with her, though a few other birds are missing feathers on their neck (which I thought maybe was residual molting, but now I don't know).
I didn't see anything...
Hello! A relative brought us a mixed-breed and mixed-age flock of pullets (?) from someone she knows. They're supposedly pullets, but I have my suspicions. But I don't have much experience sexing chickens. Could this one be a cockerel? The waterfall of feathers near the tail and slightly curving...
Yeah, I know it's upside down. :) I was messing around with it after the fact.
I'm using 11/32, which I think is what the instructions say. I'll try not screwing it in so far, and maybe try a 3/8 bit. I'll try it on an old bucket to see if I can get a seal.
I use 11/32" drill bit. I'm wondering if maybe I also screw them in too tight? I usually put waterproof silicone caulk around the hole as I screw in the nipple, too .
I've been using horizontal nipples in 5-gallon buckets for a couple of years I like them a lot, for the most part, but after extended use, the buckets inevitably crack around the nipples. I thought maybe it was because of the rounded wall of the buckets, so I tried a square bucket. Same problem...
It just looks so happy!
So, although we were only starting with four chickens, I wanted to build something that would be big enough to allow for chicken math. Basing it on 4x8 sheets of plywood also seemed like it might simplify a bit. So I decided on a 4x8 coop, which should allow for up to...
Some folks were interested in my coop webcam so I thought I’d share our setup. My husband is the techie, but I’ll do my best. I’ll give a short version, then more detail (probably WAY more than anyone is going to want ).
We’re using what’s called an IP camera (or internet camera, network...
An IP camera is what you're looking for. There are all different kinds with different functionalities. You can get them all over, especially online. They're often sold as security cameras. We got ours (a Foscam) on Amazon.
Maybe I should do a thread on how we set ours up?
Haha! I work for the State. But I have the coop cam streaming on my phone, so I can just have that sitting next to me while I work. (I don't have the sound on at work, though. I'm working from home today, so the egg song didn't disturb anyone else, haha!)
