    Heavy Pullets?

I'm still learning and looking for chickens. I have come across a term "heavy pullets". What does this mean?

    Hens attacking rooster

Thanks, the rooster is about 6 months, the hens are about 3 month. "Chops" is just chopped up corn. I think it must be an "old-timers" word. Will a layer feed contain protein as well as the calcium or should they get additional of each?

    Hens attacking rooster

My dad has about 5 buffs that he put in the pen with a rooster. The rooster had been injured by a hawk prior to this. They did well for a couple of weeks but now they are attacking him. If dad had not gone out there last night, they may well have killed him. Could they be doing this because he's...

Rooster attacked by hawk, hurt leg

My rooster was attacked by a hawk about 2 weeks ago. In the beginning, all I found were feathers but couldn't find him. After several days, I was calling the other roosters and heard a crowing coming from the woods. I crowed back and we crowed to each other until I found him. He was hopping...

    Which is safer?

Great:rolleyes:How do I get them in without resorting to a ladder?? Do you think if I kept their food away until dusk, they might come in on their own then??

    Which is safer?

I recently had to move my 4 roosters to the country. I spent a week making a house and then making it predator proof. I went to eat supper and when I came back to lock the roosters down for the night, they were up in a tree!(They would prior to this get into their original cage as sun when down)...

    Cackling rooster???

Ok, I know I've asked the sex of my chickens on here before and you guys said the white one was a rooster. I believed you were right...it even crows...last night just before bedtime I heard all this cackling coming from their room. I just knew someone had laid an egg so I ran over to see my...

    Do you ever find yourself.....

Hey! My chicks won't eat any of that stuff. I thought they were getting bored with their starter/grower stuff so I gave them leftover salad stuff from the fridge....they looked at me like I was insane and left it there to rot....but now when I feed them their mix, they look at my like "that's...

    Storing feed

I am looking into buying a lot of chicken feed and was concerned about keeping it dry and critter free. Do you think it would be ok to store the feed in empty kitty litter containers since they have a good handle and would keep stuff dry? Also, how long will it store if kept dry and somewhat sealed?

    swimming pools and chickens

Not sure if this is the right place but....here goes. Has anyone had any problems with chickens and above ground pools? I'm worried that my chickens will perch on the side and fall in. I'm betting chickens can't swim, so should I just build my chickens a run? I've been letting them free-range in...

    What are you canning now?

There are A LOT of videos on how to can on youtube. I've watched several and they do simplify the steps. I've canned a lot but for new people, it helps to actually see what it's like when the tops "pop". Just put in "how to can" in the search bar.

    Still in denial

Thanks so much...you don't know how sad I was yesterday to think ALL my babies were roosters! I was planning on having a bachelor pad because I couldn't bring myself to part with them. When I move to the farm, I'll just buy more "already laying" hens so I don't get scammed again! Thanks again...

    Still in denial

Ok, I'm VERY new at all this...I just looked again. The comb is short but it's pointy kind of like one side of the rows of points on an alligator's back...if that makes sense.
