    Sudden Chicken Death Syndrome?

I had two of my 3 year old hens die like this within a month of each other. They were fine one minute, then "poof" laying on the ground, feet up. No trauma, just looked like they went to sleep. Neither had laid an egg for a year prior. I have two more that are the same age and don't lay any...

    what did my chicken lay?!

It was sort of rubbery, but also felt sorta like a leaf... hard to explain. We have oyster shell, but they don't eat it much, so we're not real good about giving it to them. I'll be sure to give them some today and see...

    what did my chicken lay?!

Well, when she was sick, she kept acting like she was straining to poop, and she had a lot of runny poop coming out of her vent. She was inside for two days, and I soaked her and kept her clean (and she had those intestinal peices in the water after I soaked her, so she must have shed her...

    what did my chicken lay?!

I have a 2yo easter egger that normally lays pastel green eggs. However, about 3 or 4 months ago, she was sick - for two days she kept straining like she had to poop. She was not egg bound and was fine after about three days. But has not laid an egg since. Today she was in the box looking...

    Cannibalism

What would cause 2 year old chickens who never ate their eggs to suddenly start eating ALL of them - like as soon as they are laid? I had 4 eggs get eaten today. I watched for the hen to come out and as soon as she did - I ran to get the egg and it was already gone How do you stop this...

I agree - what an incredible setup! But where's all the poop? All the giant holes dug? LOL

    should I intervene?

Update: Well, it's 24 hours later, not much change. We soaked her last night and she was looking better and did lay down in the cage and sleep last night. Her eyes are clear and she'll eat a few bites from hand. Dawg: thanks for the pics, she DID have what looks like intestinal lining...

    should I intervene?

Well, in her struggles, some white pastey poo is coming out and so is some bloody poo, so I am thinking she's constipated because something is blocked... She is pretty continuously pushing and trying to lay.

    should I intervene?

Well, I gave her another warm bath and lubed her vent - still can't feel anything stuck. I masaged her around the vent, nothing. She just constantly strains and grunts like she's trying to poop. I am not sure what else to do for her?

    should I intervene?

PS - not sure it makes a difference but it's freaking freezing here in PA (like 20 degrees and snow on the ground), so maybe putting her in the warm garage and warming her up will do the trick?

    should I intervene?

Here's what I did (pretty much what you said to). I brought her in and soaked her in the laundry tub. She didn't want to put her butt in the water so I got a rag and cleaned her off and held it to her vent. Then I put her in a dog crate with towels and food and water. I did get a plastic...

    should I intervene?

I have a 2 year old Americana who was fine until this morning. I noticed she's wheezing a little and not moving very fast. As I watched her, she came out of the henhouse and has been squatting in the run. I can see her straining and, as her back is to me, I can see her vent - it looks like...

    Hen being pecked suddenly

Thanks! We did confine the bully for 24 hours. Put her back in the pen and she tried once that I saw to peck the runt, but then she stopped. Now, however, ANOTHER hen has taken it up - to the point where she chases the Sultan around the pen, and then holds her down and pecks her. It looks...

    Hen being pecked suddenly

Here is an update: Apparently, she was injured in the foot - one of her feathers was bleeding where it grew out of her foot. So we got that taken care of. Put her in isolation for a day until it stopped bleeding, she was using her foot just fine. Moved her into population, isolated the hen...

    Hen being pecked suddenly

I have seven chickens, 4 are 13 months, 3 are 12 1/2 months old. They have lived fine with each other for over a year, even through our harsh Eastern winter this past year. Suddenly, yesterday, my Golden Buff started chasing my White Sultan around and pecking at her for no reason. She is the...

    White Sultan Question

That's great to know! So if I trim it, I don't have to trim it again unless she molts and loses those feathers! COOL!

Chickens won't come in at night

Yes, I have roosts in the henhouse, as soon as they go in they are all up on the roosts asleep.

    White Sultan Question

She's just a pet, but she's so clumsy and I am sure it's because the poor thing can't see. When I pulled the feathers away to see her eyes, she was like "wow, THAT"S what you look like!" LOL Any part you can't cut (feathers don't have feeling, to they?) Thanks, Tara

Chickens won't come in at night

Well, we built a new henhouse (it's bigger and "works" better). The entrance is 1 1/2 FEET off the ground. They go in and out all day to eat (the feeder is now exclusively inside), but still sit by the door or on a roost when it gets dark and cry and cry until we come out and put them inside...
