I have a group of Sapphire Gem hens who are a little over a year old. They were incredible layers all through their first year but the last couple months have been molting so I haven’t been getting many eggs. I’m guessing the girls will start back up in the spring, if they don’t before that. But...
She seems like she might feel a little better this morning - more alert and appears to be eating and drinking, even moving around a little bit more. Her leg doesn’t seem to be much better but there hasn’t been any more blood since yesterday afternoon so hopefully that issue is resolving. I’ll...
I’ve often wondered that too because I’ve had chickens who have been vaccinated for Coccidiosis get it and even die from it. I don’t know much about the vaccines, especially Marek’s.
I don’t think the foot is swollen, she just keeps the toes all together. I can’t get her to bend it at the hip but it doesn’t really look swollen to me 😬
I think I uploaded it - it shows up on my thread. Hopefully it shows up on yours too! I think it has something to do with the hip but I don’t know enough to say for sure. The blood is really throwing me off but I guess it could be two separate issues?
She was vaccinated for both Marek’s and Coccidiosis. I just started her on the Corid today since that’s when I noticed the blood but I will continue for at least 10 days. I took a video so let me try to figure out how to post it. She stands on her good leg and looks like she’s trying to use the...
Thank you for the reply! I have them on non-medicated chick starter because they were vaccinated before they were shipped to me. I guess I’d describe their brooder as a plastic container but I started with paper towels on the bottom and then a couple layers of pine shavings. So what they’re...
Yesterday I was checking on all my chickens, feeding them and giving them water. I noticed one of my 8 week old cream legbar girls had one of her legs stretched out and was having a hard time getting around. I separated her from the other 9 chicks she was with and couldn’t seem to figure out...
Ok thank you. I Have been giving them the Corid water for a couple days and that’s the only water they have available so they should be getting the medicine. So I shouldn’t combine the Corid and nutridrench?
This is the only picture I can find that kind of shows what the big box was like. Does it look overcrowded? I had several food and water dishes all around the edges of the box and you can kind of see how the heat lamp was towards one side. I have since moved them all into smaller boxes so that...
Thank you all for your responses! I actually haven’t lost any of the shipped chicks, they seem to be doing well. The ones I have lost are the ones I hatched. When I had them all in the big brooder box the heat lamp was directly over one side of it just above the top of the box because I figured...
I incubated 40 eggs and had 35 hatch around 5/20 (MUCH better hatch than I thought it would be). I also had ordered 15 chicks and received them in the mail a few days later. In the beginning everyone seemed great, except for one the others were picking on. They pecked her eyes enough to bleed so...
I hatched some chicks almost a week ago and there was a LC Orpington that seemed more lethargic at the beginning and wasn’t really opening its eyes as much but I didn’t think a whole lot about it. I put it in with the others and when I checked on them shortly thereafter his eyes were...
Most of the Welsummer roosters I’ve had are pretty aggressive. The one we have now is referred to as “the mean rooster” by my kids. He’s about 4 years old now and just gets worse with age. I can’t let him free range anymore because he attacks the kids and dogs.
The best rooster we ever had was...
