Yes Swiss chard can be fed to chickens. There is a long list of potentially toxic plants for chickens. You can find them online. My backyard has a number of potentially toxic plants that are on the list. I did worry but my chickens been fine. So far, I haven't had any problems. I have...

I meant unfenced vegetable garden. My chickens love zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes but don't recognize the first two as they get them cut up. So tomatoes have a fence around them.

Welcome to Oregon! Hope you enjoy St. Helens. You helped me so much when I got chicks for the first time. Haven't logged in as everything is going well. One of my chickens even flies to perch on my arm. The girls were co-existing with my u fenced vegetable garden until last week. It's been so...

First four chickens ever: Predator got them all. What was it? what to do?

So sad. I've had problems with raccoons dismantling my hummingbird feeder. They were very persistent. I finally had to bolt the feeder to the tree. Because I saw how clever they can be, I have padlocks on every door in my coop along with the nest box door, 1/2" hardware cloth stapled around...

Salem is inexpensive for housing compared to Portland which has become very expensive. Though Portland celebrates its chickens, I think the limit might still be six. Salem allows 6 chickens, no roosters and chickens are supposed to be supervised if out of the coop. But the ordinance is...

Hi Stephanie, My girls LOVE Scratch and Peck. They seem to be doing well on it. Lifesource has their layer feed. Think Wilco is having a sale now. The Stayon store also carries it. I haven't tried peanuts yet. Always looking for new treats. You will have to meet the girls sometime!

My chicken is eating whatever I prune including thorns

I've been pruning my garden and this is my first spring with chickens. My alpha girl thinks whatever I prune has got to be good food. LOL She follows me wherever I go and has eaten trimmings from rose branches with thorns, lilac branches- basically whatever I prune, she wants to eat. I now am...

How do y'all prefer to hold your hens?

I hold my chickens against my body with one arm underneath the chest and my fingers of that hand spread between their legs. The other arm is over their back with that hand keeping the free wing from flapping. Hope that helps. I feed them when I hold them. I can cut nails myself by having them...

Sorry your husband was squeamish about all the disease details. It didn't phase me either. And I ended up calling Tonya last night as my EE hadn't laid in 3 days and I was worried she might be egg bound. She explained when they aren't laying their combs are paler. Which was true as I had taken...

What treat did your chickies get today?

My sister asked if I felt it was safe to eat eggs from my chickens? Made no sense to me as my coop is cleaned daily, girls eat organic feed and vegetables. I don't understand why someone would prefer store bought eggs raised in horrid conditions?
