    Sick Hen? Watch or Cull?

None of the photo uploads are working. We cleaned her bottom again and snipped some feathers where the poop got caught up. She pooped before we washed her and it was diarrhea. She is pretty swollen below her breast bone and around her vent. I believe she is on her way out. Eyes stay primarily...

    Sick Hen? Watch or Cull?

No diseases that I'm aware of. The 1st 6 birds were bought 2 years ago as pullets, and this second 6 were bought as pullets as well.

I tried to get her up and moving, but she hesitated and seemed like she could not get her footing.i will clean her again this evening and trim her feathers. I'm am worried if it's a...

    Sick Hen? Watch or Cull?

I have a hen that has poop build up on her behind.. she came to me not long ago and we cleaned her up. It didn't take long and that mess was tangled up in her hair again.. Now she is acting funny. Not participating in free ranging, just being very lonely and boring. At night she doesn't roost...

More birds more mess | Managing Deep Litter

Alright poop board it is.. thanks to everyone for all the great ideas and help. So about this DL run, how do I go about this? Where do I dump the droppings from the poop board, or do I spread them out?

More birds more mess | Managing Deep Litter

That makes sense, because every farm I've ever been to has cedar fence posts that have been there forever! I used the 4sqft per bird rule when adding the last 6 birds.. I figured the lack of 4.5 sqft wouldn't matter too much, after today I think the extra room I had with only 6 birds was...

More birds more mess | Managing Deep Litter

I can cut more holes and put some ventilation plates around the roosting area. I was using a cedar chips blend, but was told these pine chips would be better. When I had my 6 birds I would do exactly this, move bedding from other areas on top of the roosting droppings. Then overall add more...

More birds more mess | Managing Deep Litter

So sounds like I need more cleaning.. I'm trying to figure out if I can just mix in the garbage under the roost, or do I need to continue removing it. Once I remove it the ammonia smell is gone. But I haven't taken the plunge to mix it all together for fear of the ammonia smell not going away...

More birds more mess | Managing Deep Litter

Thanks for the Thanks for the reply. My coop was already built when I decided to get 6 more chicks. I am lacking space for about 4 of them. My coop LxW= 38sqft, my run is 193sqft. I have 2 windows, 1 on each side of the coop that I close during the winter months to avoid drafts, but I have...

More birds more mess | Managing Deep Litter

Last year we only had 6 birds, this year we have 11. I used to be able to manage a deep litter coop last year. I feel this year it is much harder due to the ammonia smell and amount of waste under the roost. I end up scooping most of the bedding under the roost out, instead of mixing in with new...

Roo has bleeding leg / Being pecked

Good idea, I've used Blu-Kote on our hunting dogs before. Seemed to work great. We cleaned him off and applied Vaseline for the night. We just checked on him and he's laying on the coop floor by himself. He will usually sleep there or on the bottom rung of the roost. Thanks Guys!

Roo has bleeding leg / Being pecked

Our roo has a bloody leg around his ankle area. Looks like pretty red thick blood and some of the hens are pecking at this area. What should I do? Thanks.

Brahma Rooster hopping on one leg / looks Painful!

Henry the rooster seems to be walking better. I feel like he had a few scales popped up on his feet so we soaked him in Epsom, brushed his feet/legs with a toothbrush then applied campho-phenique afterwards. Hopefully this will help him out a little.

Brahma Rooster hopping on one leg / looks Painful!

He is walking on it today.. Not 100% and when approached he hops again to get away fast. But the walking around with a slight limp is promising. I might ride this out and keep monitoring him. If he seems to get worse or more obvious signs of mites I will try the soaking and Vaseline. I added new...

Brahma Rooster hopping on one leg / looks Painful!

I checked him over a lot better today. The only thing I could see was some blood in between his toes in one spot. Almost looks like a small hole where a feather used to be. Not bleeding a lot but I noticed blood on my fingers after checking him the first time. He definitely isn't interacting...

Brahma Rooster hopping on one leg / looks Painful!

5 new hens were added to my flock of 6. I joined them together 3 months ago. I didn't notice him breathing heavily this morning. I will monitor his drinking after work today. They have 2 water jugs to drink from in the run. I will try to look him over better tonight. Yesterday was my first time...

Brahma Rooster hopping on one leg / looks Painful!

He is a year and half old. No photos yet, but he has been sitting flat both feet on floor, sometimes lifting the hurt leg, almost to let me know he's in pain it seems like.i haven't noticed and coughing or discharges. I just learned about Mareks last night looking through the Internet trying to...

Brahma Rooster hopping on one leg / looks Painful!

I noticed my roo hopping on one leg when I let the flock out to free roam after work today. He uses he wing to balance on the bad leg side.. Also when he stand to take a break he hold his bag leg up. I got a hold of him and looked under his feet.. They both look the same with no obvious sores...
