    Weasel-proofing coop and cage.

Hello, I'm sure this has been addressed in several places here, but when I read through the posts, I get mixed messages, so I would like anyone who knows something about this to chime in here: In December our three hens were killed by what I believe was a weasel or mink. According to the MN...

    Lets Talk About Breeding Rabbits!

Quote: We'll be getting our breeding trio in the spring. Reasons for breeding and raising them are: 1. Wholesome meat. 2. Fur for our own use. 3. Chores for the kids.

if you're illegal, how many chickens do you have?

Wow! Another citizen of St. Michael, MN, posted on this thread....what a small world. I had 3 criminal hens (white leghorn, gold star, silver-laced wyandotte) from April 2009 to December 2010, when they were killed by a weasel. They were loud once in a while but neighbors have never...

Prospects for growing own rabbit food?

It would make sense that, in general, of the three (cattle, deer, and rabbit disks) rabbit and deer would be the most similar, since precursors to domesticated rabbits shared the same habitats as deer.

Prospects for growing own rabbit food?

Quote: The deer salt block would seem to be much more cost effective! Does anyone know if it contains all the neccessary minerals for rabbits? What's the difference between the brown ones and the white ones? RiverOtter, do you tan your own pelts? I've practiced a few times on squirrels...

Prospects for growing own rabbit food?

I think BYC is your best bet for this kind of info. I've read that Timothy is the highest nutritional value for rabbits but I guess my main question is how much of their diet can be made up of this hay? What is in the pellets that couldn't be grown at home?

Prospects for growing own rabbit food?

Ok, this made it to page 2 with no replies. Does anyone have any suggestions for other active boards I could post this question on?

Prospects for growing own rabbit food?

Hello, I'll be getting a breeding trio of Silver Fox rabbits this spring, and I'm looking for some advice on feed. Here's the backstory: My big thing is trying to keep ongoing cost down. I don't mind a bit of start-up cost as long as the ongoing cost can be controlled. After all, raising...

Chicken wire for rabbitry: ok or not?

Hello, I want to raise meat/fur rabbits. I've been slowly making plans for location, protection, feed sources, etc. Everything I've found online regarding cage design calls for 1x2" hardware cloth for the walls and floor. My question is: Is there something wrong with chicken wire for this...

Small dark spots on eggs in fridge

I knew I wouldn't get away from posting something like this without pics Ok, I got some better ones. I also noticed when I hold them up to the sunlight, the spots show more light through, which leads my to believe it's something that's making the shell thinner in those spots.

Small dark spots on eggs in fridge

I have a Gold Star, a White Leghorn, and a Silver Laced Wyandotte. The Gold star's eggs are rock hard compared to the others' eggs. Lately I've noticed small dark spots appearing on some of the white leghorn's and silver's eggs after they have been in the fridge a few days. Some eggs have...

    washing eggs

One of my hens likes to roost in the egg box every few nights, so my eggs often have small bits of manure on them, along with some dirt if it's muddy. I rinse all of my eggs in warm water with a small bit of antibacterial soap. Eggs which are clean get a miniscule ammount of soap. Eggs which...

How to become self-sufficient (kinda) with chickens.

Original Poster here. Wow! I can't believe how much response this thread is getting. I've been reading posts every day trying to catch up. Of course all your responses have generated dozens of more questions, each one worthy of hours of discussion. So here are some summaries of my responses...

How to become self-sufficient (kinda) with chickens.

I just read this old post and had some related thoughts... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=98672&p=1 I'm not a survivalist, nor do I live on a coumpound, nor do I think it will ever come to it, BUT: I like knowing that if I woke up one morening and found myself in a Mad...

poll: are you legal or an outlaw?

My chickens are wanted hens and I'm a criminal....I'm sure I fall into some new category making me a terrorist as well since I produce a miniscule amount of my own food I'm in an outlying suburb of Minneapolis on an acre of woods. The town is mostly farms, but they recently went from 10 pages...

Problem: hens roosting in egg box. (pics) Solutions, anyone?

Some very good ideas. I like fargosmom's idea of converting part of the shelf into the nest box. Now the trick would be to get them a higher spot on which to roost. How low of a ceiling can they work with? How much higher than the nest box does the new platform have to be before they'll...

Problem: hens roosting in egg box. (pics) Solutions, anyone?

Thanks for the tips! It's great to have such a resource as BYC for a n00b such as myself. If I could go back in time I would build the little trap door a foot lower and made it open to a small box, which would be attached below the shelf. The shelf would have had a hardware cloth floor...

Problem: hens roosting in egg box. (pics) Solutions, anyone?

asylum, I don't quite understand where you say the 6-7" piece of plywood should go. Can you describe it in detail please? Also, is one box enough for the three? If I made half of the shelf their nesting box, and maybe raised the other half up an inch or two and left it open, might that work...

Problem: hens roosting in egg box. (pics) Solutions, anyone?

I have three hens which are just over three months old. I built their coop when they were chicks and they've been living in it for a little over a month now. A couple weeks ago they realized they could fly up to what I had intended to be the nesting box. They roost up there and it's full of...
