What do you do with unexpected roosters?

ok - so I'm not opposed to turning them into dinner (not my own, I don't eat chicken) but how old do they need to be before you process them?

What do you do with unexpected roosters?

I posted him available here and our local craigslist has an abundance of roosters. It seems no one wants him. It's sad, he's such a sweet boy. Anyway - what other options do I have? My neighbors are going to kill me if he keeps waking them at the crack of dawn.

Free - Oregon -16 wk friendly BR/EE mix roo - pick up only

We brought home the 5 classroom chicks my son's 1st grade class hatched and I think we have mostly roos. The first one to crow is a beautiful friendly BR/EE mix. He's super nice and has been handled daily by my 7 and 8 year old boys since the day they were hatched. We thought we had a plan for...

Newbie question about young roo behavior

Quote: Thanks, that's kind of what I thought. Guess he'll have to relocate this weekend. I'm sure gonna miss him. He had the best fluffy cheeks and was our favorite of all.

Newbie question about young roo behavior

We brought home the 5 chicks my son's first grade class hatched. They are now about 15 weeks old and we just heard the first roo practicing with his squeaky baby roo voice this morning. We can't have roosters in our city. Based on responses to the pics I posted here a couple weeks ago it looks...

    Oregon

I'm in West Linn. I'm new to the whole BYC thing. My girls (at least what I hope are girls) are 11 weeks old now. Not quite sure what they are, maybe some barred rock mixes, but we love them.

Introducing Your Dog to your chickens ***UPDATE ON SUCCESS***

Thank you for posting your update. It gives me hope that my dog can learn to live with our hens nicely. I think I need to give her more positive exposure to them instead of just constantly yelling at her.

Can I teach my dog not to want to devour my chicks?

Quote: Yeah - I can confidently say we won't be trying that method. Thanks for all the thoughts on the problem. I do think our dog is just predatory - I'm not sure I can train her away from that behavior. I think I need to reinforce the run with something. Right now the run is fenced off...

Can I teach my dog not to want to devour my chicks?

Quote: That's what I'm worried about - my kids aren't the best at remembering to lock the gate and I'm worried that eventually it will happen when I'm not there to double check it.

Can I teach my dog not to want to devour my chicks?

We have chickens for the first time ever, they are now 11 weeks old and we've had them since they hatched. My 4 year old dog loves to chase all things moving - her favorite game is keeping squirrels out of our yard. Now she's taken to stalking our chickens. They are completely fenced off from...

Chicken novice here with 10 wk olds

Thanks to everyone for the responses. At this point I'd just be happy if at least 2 are hens. Can I just ask what characteristics you're looking at that would make you think Cheeks is a roo but the twins both hens? When I look at them I think, based on Cheeks' comb and wattles compared to the...

Chicken novice here with 10 wk olds

And these are the twins - we've never been able to tell them apart until recently when one of them has gotten more of a red face than the other. They are named Granny and Flapper. I think they are BR but I don't know how to tell if they are roo's or not.

And here's Cheeks. She has big fluffy cheeks, she has had them since she first hatched, their are the funniest fluff sticking out of her cheeks.

Chicken novice here with 10 wk olds

Can you help me identify sex/breed for this one? Also - she hatched from a pretty blue green egg - does that mean that's what she'd lay? ETA: I'm sorry the pic is sideways - I don't know how to fix it.

Idea for keeping chickens COOL in outrageous HEAT!! Update w/ PICTURE!

Thanks for all these great ideas! My little 6 week olds were panting so much yesterday. I'm going to take the lid off an old cooler and use it for the trash can idea. And thanks for the tip about watering down the run - I wasn't sure if it was ok for them to be in the mud. I bet they'll have fun...
