That would be awesome! Yes, some "Hipster" chickens (crests+beards+bow ties) would be a fun answer to Showgirls. I wish you the very best of luck with that. Definitely need to post pics if/when it happens!
I have an Ameraucana and a Minorca who liked to gang up chase one of my cats when they were pullets. Even treed her at one point. I think they did it mostly for S's & G's.
I agree that Mediterranean breeds are good to look at for predator evasion, as they tend to be alert. I haven't had Brown...
Nutrena Nature Wise makes a "Feather Fixer" that is good for molting birds. I gave it to mine this year, and those birds that were not long into their molt when they started eating it did recover faster than the girls who had started molting earlier and were still eating layer food for the first...
I also have a Welsummer who seems to be taking her time. She's 32-33 weeks old (hatched late May) and . . . nothing. Seems to be quite healthy, good appetite and attitude, comb and waddles are big and bright red, though she does have an odd habit sometimes of walking about like she's squatting...
Just wanted to share the two Brabanters I picked up last year at the feed store (I think they came from Ideal originally). At the time I had never heard of them before, but after going home and doing some research, especially on BYC, I had to rush back and get a couple. They've sure lived up to...
Here's T-bird at about six weeks, looking a little less like her namesake (Mr. T) than she did in the last photo:
And "Hellboy", same age. Finally got a pic of that comb. They're about seven weeks old now and the comb isn't much bigger. "He"'s all leg compared to T-bird, though, and stands up...
Our local feed store got some of these in and I had no idea what they were, but thanks in part to this thread I decided to take a chance and get a couple. Darn you, chicken math! (I was going to put them under my broody EE hen, but she doesn't seem interested in being a mom, just sitting on golf...
Your exotic looks like a Salmon Faverolle. Beautiful boy! If he was your free chick, you were much luckier in that lottery than I was. Man, if I weren't on the other side of the country. . . . But best of luck to them both.
Looking to find my Lakenvelder rooster a new home in Calaveras County, California, or surrounding counties. He was born approximately June 5, 2015 and was vaccinated for Marek's and coccidiosis. He is standard-sized, and makes a variety of interesting sounds.
Full disclosure, he is not the...
Not so much dumb as it is an "if I had a nickel for every time" sort of thing:
So, I've fallen in love with my new turkens and love to show off pictures of them. Well, invariably the other person asks "Oh no, what happened to/who's been picking on that poor chicken?" Which then gives me an...
They started carrying it in the Lodi store around fall/winter 2013, I think?
My chickens loved it! (Somehow they can tell the difference.) Just too bad it costs more for a 40lb bag than the 50lbers I can get at the much closer feed store. (Then again, I'm not strict about organic.)
But I'm...
Thanks so much, you guys!
Michael OShay, I will definitely be checking the link out, thank you. Always so much more that I can learn.
drumstick diva, we do feel fortunate with her, but I think it might have helped a bit too that our dog was at an age with her first flock where she was...
Hah. Sounds like one of my BR babies. I should have figured before I took him home that that's what he was doing, and not just chirping loudly. We named him Boss, and that's exactly what he grew up to be.
Another McMurray freebie Lakenvelder cockerel here.
When I found out what he was and read the bad-roo stories, I made sure to handle him A LOT. He's pretty friendly--so far. Follows me around the run to see what I've got and is curious about everything. Usually one of the first chicks to try...
Awww, what a sweetie! And a beautiful little guy besides. Dogs are so giving of themselves.
Here's our girl, watching the little ones get a drink out of frame:
The turkens seem especially accepting of her, even from when they were very small. I wonder if it helps that she matches two of them...
Hi, oasishillsfarm! Welcome to the cult--er, I mean the world of chicken raising! \:D/ It's very rewarding, so I really hope you enjoy it.
As for tips, one that helped me a lot is the deep litter method for your coop. Cuts down on maintenance time, which is great for beginners AND busy farms...
Thanks so much, both of you!
That does sound familiar, Yorkshire coop. ^_^ If mine hears a chicken talking in the laying boxes, she'll sit below it and whine and not want to move until she's satisfied everything is OK. Drives her nuts when the BRs "fight" over a box. I'd be curious to see how...
My girls love kale and broccoli and cauliflower, but they prefer to pick it off the plant. (They'll eat trimmings, if they have to, but it's not the same.) So I have some dino kale growing right outside the run, for the BRs who like to escape. Perhaps we'll try some inside the run this winter...
Love your photo. So jealous. Sussexes definitely top my wish list for the next time around. They're so beautiful, and everything I read about their personalities sounds wonderful. And it looks from your pic that's it's true, too!
