    cold and new chicks

Coop 'em when feathered, but DON'T heat the coop. They'll get frostbite if the temp drops way down. Warm air holds more moisture, etc., etc...

Can't find any livestock ordinances in Quincy, MA

I've scoured the zoning and all ordinances published by Quincy, MA. All I can find are rules concerning nuisance dogs and their waste. Am I in the clear with a few pullets/hens? I'm getting nervous as they approach the transfer to coop life.

    Itchy 2 week-old Dominiques

Feathers are coming in force. Are new feathers itchy enough to cause the li'l chicks to scratch/twist/hunker down in the bedding and dust themselves repeatedly in the DE/pine shavings? They look like dusty little crazy birds. Close inspections shows no sign of mites or the like, no skin...

When do I bring out the heat lamp??

Heat lamps create a temperature differential which causes humidity to collect in your coop. Moisture in cold weather = frostbite and illness. Avoid this for the health of your birds.

    Trimming chicken beaks?

My dominique chicks are clearly interested in beak filing on their own. They rub their beaks back and forth a couple of times each on whatever the hardest thing in the coop happens to be, wood in this case. Anybody use something like those pumice stones that parrot owners seem to keep in cages?

I found something very interesting about lime last night!

BTW: garden lime applied to a wound will do no more than cornstarch. Nor will it make mortar, plaster, or whitewash.

I found something very interesting about lime last night!

CAREFUL PLEASE!! Lime is an alkali that helps neutralize soil that is too acid. It is made from crushed limestone. CORRECT: that is AGRICULTURAL LIME that you put on garden beds to adjust Ph. Lime is also an ancient building material. BUT they differ in their structure. The lime used for...

5 Dominiques, 1 Wk old: don't seem to want much heat

"Read" your chicks. Great responses, all. Thanks. These li'l peepses are practically grown up, it seems. Just coaxed the last of them to jump in the hand for some elevation and flax seeds. The others are already smoking and cussing, riding on my shoulders, and the like. If I can just get...

5 Dominiques, 1 Wk old: don't seem to want much heat

5 Dominiques. One week old. Brooder box had lights in a hood, temp always around 95F underneath it. Chicks slept wherever they seemed to nod off. I just moved them to a deluxe pen I built, 4'x5', same lights under a hood in one area. Ambient temp is around 80F, closer to 90F under the hood...
