Good Morning! I was struck with chick fever this spring and picked up 3 lavender orpingtons, 1 GLW (sold as pullet), and 2 Blue Rocks (Blue Sex Links). I am confused by one of the Blue Rocks due to the feathered legs. You can still see the vestiges of the distinctive eye marks. The feet have...
Just to follow up for anyone else out there wondering about their chicks, the chick pictured in Post #4 is a pullet. I had others at 8 weeks tell me it had to be a cockerel, but my gut kept telling me it was a pullet. By 14 weeks, no hackle or saddle feathers. Today, at 18 weeks, it laid a...
So this would have been the first bird up above. Think this is a cockerel at 6 weeks? I was confused by the coloring which seemed more female pattern (but I'm a novice so it doesn't count for much).
I hatched out 8 chicks on July 29/30. Everyone is right at 6 weeks. I have 4 that are obvious cockerels (2 black orpingtons (? mottled) and 2 leghorn crosses). I'm pretty sure the other leghorn cross is a pullet due to very little comb development and still orange/light. The brown chick was...
I think by 16 weeks you will know based on hackle/saddle feathers as well. I don't think you can depend upon crowing as a submissive cockerel may not crow if a more dominant cockerel is present, but that's only based upon what I have read. I have no real life experience.
Here's the one I'm on the fence about, but I know it's really early. My gut says its also a boy. It's not screaming cockerel like the other two, but that seems like alot of comb for 3.5/4 weeks.
Here are updated photos. So, as a wildtype colored bird (red/blue base), is the coloring female? There are a few black tips on the chest, but not black feathers. The rooster was a blue/red Easter Egger with a straight comb and cheeks. This is my only chick with cheeks out of 5 of his babies.
Thank you, JedJackson! Unfortunately, two out of the three have combs/wattles this big and pinking up. The third one I'm on the fence about. It is much smaller in body size, no tail yet, and smaller comb but I think all three may be cockerels. Out of eight chicks, I suspect at least 5 are...
Not sure how old they are, but the one on the right looks like a cockerel. The other Columbian pictured also looks like it could be a cockerel as they look fairly young. Just my guess. How old are they? Multiple photos with different angles would be helpful for the middle one.
I recently hatched out a variety of eggs with a broody hen and in the incubator. Several are barnyard mixes, but 5 of the eggs were supposed to be orpingtons, either: lavender, chocolate, or mottled. Three of them hatched, two never developed, but they were not marked by the person who gave...
I hatched this chick from an EE rooster over a variety of hens, but one hen was brown/red barred. Is this little chick barred or is that a different pattern? There was not white/yellow dot on the back of the head at all, completely chipmunk pattern down feathers.
I have a feeling that is...
Thanks! Now the "what sex is the bird?" game begins. LOL!! I only have one that I'm fairly certain is a pullet based on leg genetics. Apparently the dominant white gene in Leghorn crosses also inhibits the dark legs so I cannot tell on any of the leghorn crosses based on leg color. But, I'm...
Thanks, everyone. It did not make it. These two had both been under the hen outside and then moved inside which I think greatly affected the humidity (as it is so humid here). I opened up the other one and it looks like it had been dead a few days. I'll know next time (maybe not) that those...
I certainly did not think you sounded rude, honesty is greatly appreciated.
I do not have a rooster, so I had a friend collect fertile eggs for me. I put all of the eggs under the hen on July 8. Someone local convinced me that it was shrink-wrapped in the shell and wouldn't be able to...
