    Yellow Legged Buff Orpington?

I know this thread is old but it's still helping! I have 3 out of 36 BO, that are apparently BR, which works for me because I do have some barred rock anyway. Thanks for all your knowledge!

That's a good idea too! Like shutters, hopefully they won't break though, we got fiberglass panels, like you would use for a greenhouse.

@MeepBeep That's basically what we're doing, except the windows will be attached all year round. We basically live in a wind tunnel, in the middle of a bunch of farm land, so ability to block some if the wind will be important. Hopefully between the sunlight and the wind I can find a...

The open upper half of these walls will be windows. Do any of you have input as to whether that might be to much light? I had never thought of that, until my dad mentioned it today.

New construction for the new flock!

Haha, yes we have a pretty big yard. The concrete slab was a chicken house in a former life. The farm is my husband's family estate, they used to do cows and chickens, switched to cash crops in the early 90s. I'm the crazy one wanting to bring chickens back. Next year I'm gonna try for...

New construction for the new flock!

Finally some more progress! The weather got nice, and the project got put on the back burner. Now that everything is planted and there's a group in the brooder, it's time to step it up...

New construction for the new flock!

Thanks Terry! The boys were "helping" yesterday. Got some walls framed for doorways, and half of the roof cross-beams up, and now we've got three days of winter storm advisories to slow us down!

    Non-Poisonous & Chicken Proof Plants

@Newtochicks2016 Nice call on climbing roses! that would be beautiful on a chicken run, I just ordered and am waiting to plant some jiaogulan, also known as immortality herb, it makes a nice tea for people so I think it will be safe for chickens. I'm hoping it will climb up the side of the run...

    Current Hardware Cloth/Welded Wire Pricing

I've never heard of ZORO, but I'm glad I have now! I'm probably going to get mine through menards, it's a pretty good sale right now, and we have a store 20 minutes away. I heard through the grapevine, (the guy working in lumber, we've spent A LOT of time at menards this week) that they're...

I think 750$ is a reasonable amount to expect to spend, some thrifty engineers can do it for less...but I found that when I got a good deal on hardware cloth (at a farm auction) I sprung for the more expensive hinges, added a couple extra latches for security, and decided to side the beauty in...

The price of lumber can be crazy indeed!! Our 4x8 coop probably cost around half of our 17x26 coop (albeit unfinished so far) so, I say shoot big, 4 chickens seems to be the gateway drug of chicken farming!

New construction for the new flock!

We are in the process of upgrading our chicken game. Last year we started with four birds, which ended up being all roos!! Haha, but we love our big boys so much that we've decided to get then enough ladies to stay occupied! How could you not love these guys? Moving the "old" coop...feels...

    Introducing different breed to Orpingtons

Thanks for the advice oldhen! We ended up getting mostly orpingtons, some welsummers, and a few cuckoo marans. They are about the same size fully grown, and are all cold hardy, so hopefully they will like each other! Now to read up on introducing the new girls!
