Help! We have a broody hen who simply won't break!

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for the advice... We have a year old silkie hen who goes broody about every six weeks. We do not need her to hatch eggs. Our normal trick to snap her out of it is to put her in a separate cage with food and water, away from the coop for a few days. We try letting...

Vertical (gravity) vs. horizontal (spring loaded) watering nipples

I have 5 day old baby chicks who arrived Friday morning (it's Sunday pm). I switched out their cup waterer to the horizontal nipples about an hour ago. I saw your video, and just wanted to confirm with you that 5 day old chicks are strong enough to activate the system. Our broody hen adopted...

    How strong are raccoons?

Hi all, We're building a new coop, and I'm considering using rare earth magnets for door closures. They range in strength- options include 10 lbs, 16 lbs, 40 lbs, 70 lbs and > 100 lbs of pull strength. There will only be one door that is close to the ground, otherwise the coop doors and run...

    Sexing our Silkies- any guesses?

We're new chicken owners and have four 10-ish week old silkies. They came from different brooder boxes and we think the oldest and youngest are maybe 2 weeks apart. We're hoping for pullets as we have to give the roosters away....let us know what you think! Blue frizzled silkie- Bowzer. The...

I've tried putting treats in the cups, and for the last two days have been pushing their beaks against the lever (gently) to show them. No dice. I have to keep an extra waterer out...

How do you teach chicks to drink from cup waterers?

Hi all, Our 6-7 week old silkies will happily drink from their new cup waterers, but ONLY if I've hit the lever to fill the cups. They can't figure out how to activate them on their own. Any tips?

New to chickens! Pretty please we need some help!

Thanks junebugga! Does anyone have any tricks to teach the chicks how to activate the cup waterer levers? I've tried tapping the cups, holding treats over them, etc. For now since I'm home during the day I just fill the cups for them so they don't get dehydrated We do have a light in our coop...

New to chickens! Pretty please we need some help!

Hi all, thanks in advance for all the help. We've been using BYC as our bible for the last few weeks! We have four 6-week old silkies we recently welcomed to our family. We just moved them outside from the breeder in to their coop/run and have run into some issues. 1. Cup waterers- they drink...
