    Polite Introductions?

Quote: This was an excellent source of information. Thank you for pointing me there. I've started letting the older hens out with the chicks safely out in the grass enclosed in a large dog cage. Only the Brown Leghorn is interested and she circles the cage. I also put the dog cage near the...

    Chick with crusty butt

Thanks everyone for your kind concern and helpful hints. The chick didn't make it - it ate, drank and pooped. Wish I knew what happened. <shrug> ~Anne

    Omg help!!!!!!!!!

I left a watermelon rind for my hens and it was cleaned down to a transparent rind when I got home. They were still caged waiting for the coop to be finished. It cleaned them out - what a runny mess to cleanup! Maybe you could try some melon to help them expel the poison. ~Anne

She skipped and day and we have had an egg each day thereafter. They are all the same small size but tasty. Will the eggs get bigger over time and when? ~Anne

    Chick with crusty butt

My little chick is not doing well this morning. It's much weaker so I have a pessimistic outlook. Last night it was moving around and even went back for seconds on the yogurt. I tried a little Karo and water which seemed to give him a little spark but the chick fades in and out. It's cold to...

    Chick with crusty butt

The little one is still alive and weak. It will peck for food and drink. Yes, they are on chick starter feed. I introduced yogurt and it was fun to watch them try it out. The oil seemed to help keep the rear clean. The other five are the liveliest chicks I've seen in a long time. ~Anne

    Chick with crusty butt

One of my new 2 week old chicks (6 of them) was not able to poop. I removed a big blob of dried poop by rinsing the chick off with water. The chick has not grown but the other 5 have taken off and are almost twice the size. There are 2 of each breed and this is one of the Barred Rocks. The...

    First Egg Today! But whodunnit?

Quote: The little egg was white and I'm so new at this, I have no idea what color either breed lays. I lost my Egyptian about two weeks ago and I was expecting her to lay the first egg - pink.

    First Egg Today! But whodunnit?

I posted for the first time today to this forum and then we found our first small but perfect egg. I was so excited I broke it into a cup before I took a picture. Now my question is which hen laid the egg? I have a rather small Andalusian and a Brown Leghorn both the same age, 5 months. Would...

    Colorado Newbie

I've plundered around the internet looking for answers but this web site is the best source to be found for information. My grandma raised chickens and sold eggs to help make ends meet. I always had fun helping her gather the eggs. Maybe that's why I'm starting my own flock of egg bearers. A...

Just thought I would inform everyone....

I just picked up some new chicks from a breeder and asked him if he had any advice for getting chickens to lay eggs. He told me you have to have lots of light and sometimes you 'have to heat them up'. He puts tobasco sauce in the drinking water!!!! I'm tempted, but what if I have roos not...

Is this an Ameruacana or Easter Egger Rooster? UPDATE

I'm the dummy who posted earlier, but the rooster on Craigslist really looks like my Brown Leghorn, "Brownie", who is supposed to be a 5 month old pullet. ~Anne

    Andalusian? I don't think so....

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and to raising chickens. I'm so dumb I raised a hen last summer only to have her crow in October. Now I need your collective help. This 5 month old pullet was supposed to be the last andalusian at the feed store. Can anyone tell me what I have here? ~Anne
