    Sick quail (golden manchurian coturnix)

This sounds very much like infectious corzya. Please watch any others that have been around her as it is extremely contagious.

    Quail and quail eggs

I have three bloodlines currently - jumbo wilds from Myshire Farm, Italians from K Dale Coturnix, and a cross of the two. The Myshire birds are huge and very calm, the ones from K Dale Coturnix are flightier but slightly better layers, and I’m hoping the cross combines the best traits of both.

How tall is a coturnix quail hatchling?

My hatching baskets are about 2” tall and they manage to race around inside them without difficulty.

Having trouble sexing adult Coturnix Quail

Maybe this will help This is a female. Notice how nothing is projecting or swollen to stand out past the vent? This is a male, obviously. Ignore the foam and notice the “bulb” projecting on the tail side of the vent. Examine a few adults for which you know the gender and compare. Once...

    Brooder questions

I use large flake pine shavings for the first couple weeks until I’m sure they all know how to find the feeder. After that I switch to a mini flake from the local feed store... it’s finer than the stuff pictured by Nabiki but coarser than sawdust. I like it because I can use a kitty litter...

New to building coops..need advice from the seasoned chicken owners!

I think I’d paint it - a light color to reflect the sun. I’d probably just use white Kilz or Zinsser.

    Coop Troubles

I wouldn’t put straw bales around the base as that’s likely to end up attracting rodents looking for a comfy winter home.

New to building coops..need advice from the seasoned chicken owners!

I always use white, exterior grade, semi-gloss paint on interior walls. The semi-gloss is scrubbable and white makes it easy to spot if mites or other creepy-crawlies have invaded the coop. I also caulk all joints and seams to remove as many hiding spots for mites as possible. I use scrap...

    How high is too high?

I like perches to be at about my chest level so they’re easy to access if I need to take one off the roost at night. A thought... if you put plywood on top of those rafters you’ll create a second story storage space as well as blocking them from roosting out of reach.

    Perch width, what’s the science?

I haven’t seen studies specific to chicken perches, but there are a number that have been done over the years on cage birds. All the ones I’ve read indicate a variety of shapes and sizes are best to exercise the feet and help prevent arthritic joints. The round perches that are sold with cages...

    How long do cockatiels live?

My cockatiel, Fred, lived a few months past his 32nd birthday. The breeder started him on a basic seed mix but I managed to switch him to ZuPreem pellets after a few months. He also got a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, plain pasta, bread, and seeds as occasional treats. In his late 20's...

Are crested cream legbars show able?

Actually, there is a Cream Legbar club (crested is not part of the breed name) working on APA approval. They are now showable at APA sanctioned shows. For more info, check out this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/713115/cream-legbar-working-group-standard-of-perfection

    Langshan Thread!!!

My goal is a multiple purpose flock that is sustainable - slow growth for joint health and general vigor, good egg production, substantial frame, true to type based on SOP, broody on occasion, with a longer productive lifespan than the mass-produced hybrids. My (tentative) plan is to begin...
