How high is too high?

I've had some get 20 feet up into my shed rafters. They are usually young light breeds. It doesn't last more than a few months or for a season. Most stop and find something more reasonable as they mature.

Roost height can be dependent on landing area.
The higher the roosts, the larger the open floor space needs to be to avoid any crashes.
Sometimes having intermediate landing areas can work ok.
But I like them to roost where I can easily reach them for exams after dark,
and where their night poops can be consolidated for daily removal.

I like perches to be at about my chest level so they’re easy to access if I need to take one off the roost at night.

A thought... if you put plywood on top of those rafters you’ll create a second story storage space as well as blocking them from roosting out of reach.
