    Winter molts

-20F a couple weeks ago when one of our 9 hens started to molt. She has been hiding in a nesting box most of the time since. She seems to be doing ok (certainly is leaving evidence in the box that she is eating well). My bigger concern is that we are down to one egg per day from the 9 hens...

    Pond setups for ducks

Looking for duck behavior info. Been successful for several years raising "free range" hens (a dozen). Apparently inheriting 3 fakebook ducklings (sounds like they have no flight feathers yet). We have a 1/3ac "farm pond" about 400ft from the chicken/goat yard 4ft fence in between. Will...

When can little ones go with big ones

Did this spring at about 8 weeks and no problems. Had a dozen new chicks in a pen adjoining the 3 old girls roosting area for about 2 weeks before combining.

    Sexing chicks-comb color or size?

Ended up with a rooster to be in the latest batch of 12 chicks (and 3 old girls). Have never had a rooster. Thinking will keep him. When do we need to get him out of the girls dorm? Don't want to get into having to candle every egg produced (or to incubate eggs now). New chicks were...

    Chicken with neck injury.

Thanks for the responses. She didn't make it thru the night. I assume shock was too severe. I wish I knew that cause the injury. I think the rest stay in their run for a while.

    Chicken with neck injury.

Flock locked in a run each night. Kids let them out this morning where they run with some pygmy goats. Since had this arrangement have had not injury or loss of hens. I think the goats protect the hens. Within 3 hrs something had mauled this hen's neck. A large area of feathers. We sprayed...

    Ailing chicken

Have had chickens for about 3 years but have had no health problems. Lost a few to wildlife before created a high security chicken tractor. Winter the tractor is attached by a run to an inside coop. Have 9 hens even thru -20F averaged 5-6 eggs per day. One hen is 2yr the other 8 are 1yr...

What do you do with all your eggs?!

<I>I visited the CDC page. Time to start thinking about reducing the risk. Thanks for looking out for us. Reducing the Risk of Salmonella Enteritidis Infection<I> Don't put much stock in ANYTHING from CDC. That place is 90% kook politics and fake "science". Look at the current flu problem to...

Comment by 'neiowa' in article 'Winter-Coop-Temperatures'

28F plus a heater? Our would be stripping down and streaking. In NE Iowa we have had a somewhat colder normal winter. A couple weeks after Christmas where it never got up to zero including several nights down to -20F. 9x assorted hens have 80ft2 inside with heated water and an outside 250ft2...

    Cookie Tin water heater

My modification to the "cookie tin" heater. Used 10 bulb section of an old Christmas light string. The type with screw in 5w C8 bulbs (and LED string may save you $ but not going to heat anything). This allows you to adjust the heat output as required for temp by loosing/tighting bulbs...

Chickens killed with only heads eat

Lost one chicken head middle of the afternoon yesterday. Nearly grown 6m old chickens have free run of large yard. Their mobile coop about 40 feet from the house. A few feathers at their feeder inside the coop, large batch at spot between the coop and house.; Then the mess with the body...
