Have some of you dangled an earthworm (night crawler) in front of your chicks yet? Try it, you will be in for a surprise. You can find night crawlers and mealy worms at your local Wal-Mart back near the fishing gear. Frogstomper

Hi: Though I have had my little chickee babies for only a little more then four months, I have become almost an expert at mixing up their feed...that is with the help of our forum members here. At first I used the store starter feed with medication. Then I re-discovered my wheat storage in...

You know you love your chickens when...

You're lying in bed at night and cannot get to sleep BECAUSE you didn't bring one of the chickees to bed with you. I have three that are pullets about 3 months old. Almost every night I climb into bed but remain sleepless until I finally get up and go into the chick's indoor cage and talk to...

Whats the most humane way to kill a chicken?

Just let it in a room with a ferret. Won't be long before you are pulling feathers. I know! Terrier dogs and cats are another way to get a bird dead without touching it. Frogstomper (Meant to be of humor)

That mixture looks pretty OK. Only one category of ingredients that may be a little heavy is the fibre of 10% +. I purchase a fairly generic scratch/layer feed from Pet Club for $9.99, but I do not use it for their exclusive alimentation. I like to make part of their feed myself. I have...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Traceaskew Wow, that's hard to type! I am (was) new to baby chicks about seven weeks ago. I bought three; Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, and a Barred Plymouth Rock. They obviously exhibit different personalities and they get along fine with each other. Then, a couple of weeks ago I...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hello, Bruce You're right on...the three larger chicks are Buff Orpington, Black Australorp, and Barred Plymouth Rock. As they grew bigger (and that was fast) I toyed with the idea of one more chick hoping for a RIR, Maran or Hampshire Red. The only clerk on duty at the feed store (Pet Club)...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

HI, Beekissed....... I'm not at all sure what "sex link" pullet means. Because you also used the words "little red" I might make the assumption that your are possibly referring to a RIR or perhaps a Hampshire Red...either would be very acceptable in my "herd". Thanks for the post reply...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Okay...I don't want to get fined or go to jail so here is a photo. You cannot see much of what I discussed in my last post. The temp water bottle is hung on the kennel cage door. The heating pad is tucked under the 2x4 "roost" I constructed for just that and to give them their own selection...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hi...I'm new to this chicken thing. I had the good fortune to think of using a heating pad even before I discovered this thread. My summer home is solar powered and using a 250 Watt heat lamp through the night was out of the question. My three little chicks are not so little anymore having...

Is the wheat you refer to the grain? or has the outer shell been cracked? Thanks

    Feeding grains to chickens

One of my questions is the same as that which another poster asked: "Can you feed chickens uncooked rice?" It was pretty well answered on that thread with a good deal more 'food for thought'. I am very new at this -- we got our three baby chicks just two days ago. I have scads of wheat...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I'm new to forums, and really new at raising chickens. Hope I am doing this right. I acquired my two pullets two days ago (Buff Orp and Ameracauna) and they are in their temp home...a large cardboard box. I realize that they need some warmth but I have only solar panels for my power source...
