I have several 3-month-old silkies (hens) and wondered if it would be safe to put them in with my 1-1/2-year-old rooster. Or do I just have to try it & see? (The young roosters are already crowing!)
I put 6 10-week-old silkies outside in their own little house (about 3x5) with a 350-degree heat lamp. I'm in NE PA and we've had really cold weather. They've been just fine--nice and cozy, even down to below zero. When we start getting consistantly warmer weather, I'll switch to a smaller bulb.
hinkjc: Thanks. I guess I'll just do it! Can't just keep waiting for warmer weather...that ain't gonna happen, at least for awhile anyway. It's time. Thanks again!
I may have really spoiled my 6 silkies. They're 7-1/2 weeks old, in our mud room, and I'm still using a light (60W). But now I want to put them outside in my little 3x5 hen house, which is not insulated. We're in NE PA and it's "maybe" in the 30s during the day and sometimes the teens at night...
Everybody's information is very helpful. I'm going with the Permethrin (which I already did last night). Used a little, just in their shavings, when they were about a week old and it seemed to work, but didn't realize you have to follow through with another treatment...guess that's why they are...
Wonderful information! My 6 silkie chicks are 4 weeks old and I'm pretty sure they have mites, although I can't see them. I just thoroughly cleaned their coop--a large plastic dog crate--which is in our mud room, just off our family room. [Guess I picked the wrong time of year to raise chicks in...
Thank you everyone for your input. I couldn't see anything in the shavings or on the chicks. I cleaned the brooder out last night and put just a very light dusting of Perm. on the floor. This morning they've stopped all that excessuve scratching and head shaking...just normal stuff, and they...
That is possible, since the bag of shavings were in the same shed as the chicken coop, even though I try to treat out there regularly. They scratch their necks/heads with their feet, pick under their wings with their beaks, and shake their little heads. It may not hurt anything to put a little...
My first incubating experience. Hen and Roo both white and they're the only ones I have, but my 6 babies are like 2 different colors...3 look more buff and 3 have kind of mixed coloring with a lot of yellow feathers. The picture makes them look whiter than they actually are. But that's quite...
Nope...born in the new incubator in the house and now in the new "brooder" in the house. That's what my husband said he thought it was -- just typical behavior and preening. Maybe I'm just a nervous first-time "mom". I appreciate your response very much.
3-day-old chicks scratching their necks, scratching under their wings with their beaks, and twitching/shaking their heads. I can't see anything, but could they have mites? They've been only in the house. Is it safe to use a little Permethrin powder in the bottom of their brooder when I change...
Thanks for the great idea! We have the exact same kennel--never used! And it works perfectly. Looks like you have quite a layer of shavings also. I wondered if I have too much--at least an inch deep. But if you have to replace it every couple days, that seems like a lot of waste. Can I use DE...
1. My 6 beautiful 3-day old silkies are scratching their necks, scratching under their wings with their beaks, and twitching their heads while sleeping. I can't see anything, but could they have mites? They're in the house, not around other chickens. Is it safe to use a little Permethrin in the...
