He has eight hens. The hens he has are all about five or six pounds by the way. Some bo's and some sex links and some welsummers. I just weighed him and he weighs 8 1/2 lbs. So that's not really too big, I guess. How do you trim their nails?
I have a RIR/BO rooster who is gentle and calm but he is so big that he has had to be removed from the hens. He is not intentionally rough but his size is causing the ladies to have leg injuries ans bloody shoulders. I would like to try and find him a new home but does anyone have any other...
Interesting thread. The first few years I had chickens I didn't have a coop. Didn't even know I needed one. I have a dog that patrols, so no more varmints, except hawks. But you are right ab0ut those roos! They get it in their heads what is best for the ladies and they don't care what my plans...
I have my chicken coops under a group of post oaks. It has provided great protection form the elements and from the nasty hawk that lives here. The poo hasn't harmed the trees in any way but I did read that changing the level of soil can harm certain oak trees as they are very sensitive to a...
Ok. After getting all this great info off this thread, I see all my wellies are pullets! Yea! I am very happy to have these girls and to see all these great pictures of how they will turn out and especially the eggs. I noticed some like the smooth colored eggs and some like the speckled.To...
I just got my first Welsummers last Sunday. I think they are around six weeks old. Can someone explain to me the comment about telling the sex with face markings? These are hatchery chicks and are supposed to be sexed but a couple of them have a roo-ish look. And also, are there any Welsummer...
I love seeing all the eggs and birds on this thread! I have two EE's right now. One lays a sky blue egg and the other lays a sage green egg. But I haven't been able to find the green eggs in several weeks as she has been going to the woodsy part of my property to lay. My whole family has been...
Thanks for the info. I don't mind the pale color of the egg so much as the size but it sounds like there is hope.
I need to get an updated picture of her when my husband gets back from OK with camera.
Well, I am disappointed! I have this great looking (imo) BO/Dom cross pullet who just started laying. She has laid several eggs now and they are small. and pale. My Bo's laid large glossy pinkish brown eggs and I was hoping for that with this pullet. And I was wanting to hatch some more of this...
My dominiques lay small eggs too but I like the breed history and their look. The barred rocks were better layers and bigger eggs too. Both were good free-rangers. But don't expect any chicken to get away from predators.
That's true about the roos having favorites. Back when I had two roos and ten hens, several hens had no feather loss at all and some were bare and bleeding. Also, if the second in command rooster bred with a hen, the alpha had to run and breed her also. Right now I have two coops and two...
As it turned out, I am glad he is a boy. I had to sell my other rooster when my hubby lost his job last summer and this guy was the only boy out of a clutch of chickies that hatched late last summer.
Well, I thought I would update ya'll on this guy. He is a huge rooster now. He fooled everyone I knew, then he hit puberty and...wow! He has an awesome crow. Very pleasing sound. I don't have a camera now but I will get a pic when i can.
